From the moment the delicate shell of his egg cracked, he heard the same thing. His parents, tutors, countless noble visits repeated it over and over - he was destined for greatness. All he had to do was study hard (sneeze over dusty scrolls), cultivate social relationships (ooh and aah at the right time, kiss *** when needed) and do as he was told (no questions asked). For someone blessed with a great natural curiosity and even greater adventurous spirit, the no questions part became the biggest obstacle. So many precious gems, rare books and delicious food brought every day and nobody, not a single soul, bothered to stop and think where all of these marvels came from. He pestered, and ooh'd and aah'd, even kissed *** when needed, to learn the piece of information that would undo all the years of aristocratic training. A merchant ship brought all of the riches in. A ship. Sailing the wild untamed seas. And so began the daydreaming. Not of libraries, but of crashing waves and a daring captain that looked suspiciously like him. It wasn't him, of course. It was...Captain Ironside. Yes, that sounded about right. His noble family would never name their offspring in such a crass way. As the pile of scrolls and books he studied grew, so did the legend of Ironside. Not in a way one would expect. His heroics scaled down - slaying villainous pirates turned into learning the ropes of seafaring. Magical lands started resembling geographically accurate maps. He wasn't sure when the daydreaming turned into planning. Until the day maps and rumors brought in whispers of a harbor town. Far enough to shed all of the remnants of his old life and full of all manner of creatures. Just the place for a highborn Imperial gentleman to disappear, and Ironside, the inexperienced but willing deckhand, to come to life. He knew it wouldn't be easy. Hauling cargo was far from the daydreams of his youth, but there was no choice to be made, not really. There was only one place Ironside would ever feel at home - breathing in the sea breeze and wondering what adventures awaited beyond the horizon.
