Gazing peacefully out of the seaside-facing rooms of Corona’s inn, one may see a glint of iridescent light, easily mistaken for the reflection of the sun on the shore. In Corona, of course, this is no ordinary sparkle. Hatchlings tell tall tales of a large monster lurking — an ancient serpentine huntress, sent to deliver fresh sacrifices to the Tidelord himself. While she may be older, Circe is no ancient serpent; rather, she is innkeeper Maehwa’s longtime friend and invaluable trading partner. On a regular visit to the tide pools nestled in the reedy cliffside, Maehwa encountered Circe, who proposed a trade: a basket of kelp for a quiet place to stay. Circe is only one child of a large underwater clan, and she often finds herself yearning for a warm, tranquil, and dry place to retreat. She finds this in visits with Maehwa, where the two trade herbal remedies and gossip like schoolgirls. Yet a large family also entails a great deal of work, so Circe only appears every so often. Circe's infrequent visits contribute to her cryptid status, with sightings happening sometimes months apart from one another, leaving plenty of time for the tales to grow ever taller.
