 Broadwaters  patriarch • teacher • friend The Rat scurries ahead of you, stopping when you reach a particularly large sunning rock. Atop the rock lies a slumbering sandsurge, looking almost as though he were melting right into the surface beneath him. “My muse,” Rat exclaims, “my idol, the father of my den, my Broadwaters!” The dragon does not stir save for the even rise and fall of his chest. He seems to be resting deeply. “Broadwaters was the first to appear to me, many many sunshines ago. I saw him as a young fae, much closer in size to me and much more naive, but so very brave. Yes, brave indeed. He was destined then to lead a great hoard, one whose children would come from within and without. And he has!” Rat claps mightily. “His gentle nature keeps his heart open to kin of many kinds, and his propensity toward service fosters a special connection to the Gladekeeper within many of his followers.”  The Rat knits its fingers together, lost in thought for a moment, before continuing. “I have watched him build his hoard from nothing with his beloved Shatterwing - she who brought forth many hatchlings in service to Gladekeeper. Together, they have nurtured strength and compassion in the ones who live in this glade, and together, they have withstood heavy burdens.” Wrinkling his whiskers, the Rat gestures to the scorched and thorny terrain around you. It nods solemnly. “It was Shatterwing who led Broadwaters to the ancient ones in the Shifting Expanse and helped him to make offerings to the Stormcatcher. Blessings of rain for our lands, in exchange for their devotion, you see. A higher price than they bargained, though. He is transformed.” Pausing, Rat gives you a most somber expression. “Our Broadwaters has but recently returned from the Expanse, and his journey and changing has taken a heavy toll. His body absorbs the strangling heat, and slowly we have seen life return. Mayhaps we will see the sweet summer storms again soon.” |
