Every day, Nightfall is reminded of one simple truth – she is not her own dragon. Rather, she was offered to Lehine by her father, Siefre, as penance for the rebellion that he and his sister organised (even going so far as to name her after Lightfall). Lehine took Nightfall as her ward, and has raised her with a firm but fair hand. Nightfall’s only remaining sibling, Hawthorn, protects her as best he can because they both know that if their father and aunt were to attempt another coup, it would be Nightfall who would be used as insurance against them.

She can’t escape her role in the clan, but Nightfall tries to live as though she’s just a normal member of the clan – she loves her mate Firedance dearly, and has a strong maternal instinct, typically looking after the hatchlings of other clan members who have work to do or are busy raiding or battling.
