Stormstone
Stormstone likes to think of himself as something akin to a weather rock, a stone used to predict the weather. He even named himself after them. However, firstly, he doesn’t realize that “weather rocks” are a facetious, joke phenomenon, and secondly, he is surrounded by Lightning dragons who know more about the weather and storms than any rock, who all find this comparison ludicrous.
But perhaps this comparison is more accurate than anyone thinks. When Synope is mining, Stormstone is sent ahead of her into uncovered passages to check the air for dangerous gases and toxic fumes. He is like a weather rock in the way that he is sent ahead to determine the circumstances. But the joke of weather rocks is that it’s obvious — if the stone is wet, it’s raining; if the stone is warm, it’s sunny; if the stone is white, it’s snowing. The tragedy that makes Stormstone’s job necessary is that these gases are, more often than not, not obvious, and are invisible, scentless, and of a similar density to normal air. Too many dragons have ventured into these toxic fumes, only to realize the danger too late.
Stormstone is a loyal and stoic dragon who’s always by Synope’s side. He is more than aware of the danger he faces if he slips up, and he is prepared to face it head-on. Some dragons think him bold or brave, but he considers himself more the type to keep his head down and do what needs to be done. He has no particular fascination with the gases he traces, no real interest in mining or its rewards, no transfixation with the tools he uses. He is just determined to help out his clan, and he thinks this is the best way to do it without garnering too much attention.
