Biography
This dragon belongs to HiccupsLeftLeg #132771.
Toothless' beginnings are much the same as any other Mirror dragon: he was born in a large, swarming Mirror Pack traveling through one territory after another, always on the hunt. The trouble began when the pack strayed too close to the Lightning Farm in the Shifting Expanse. Multiple lightning strikes soon had the pack scattered in all directions and many members met their end during the storm. When the chaos ended, Toothless found himself alone. Unable to track either scent or footprint of his previous packmates, the young dragon set off into the desert.
The Mirror had been aimlessly wandering the sands for nearly two days when he met Maleficent. Initially suspicious of the Guardian, it was two sleepless nights and one more scorching day under the desert's harsh sun before Toothless finally trusted the larger dragon out of necessity. As a Mirror, Toothless had a difficult time believing anything Maleficent told him about 'Searching' or 'Charges'; but despite their clashing personalities, many arguments, and nonexistent resources, the Guardian didn't fly off without him and Toothless eventually had to accept that Maleficent meant every word she was saying.
After five days (for Toothless, three for Maleficent) surviving off of whatever small prey was in the area and water harvested from cacti, the two found themselves at an outcropping of rocks towering over the sand. This brought about yet another disagreement: whether to stay or move on. Toothless inevitably won by simple virtue of being Maleficent's Charge; all he had to do was refuse to leave. May it never be said that a Mirror is unwilling to press an advantage.
It was obvious from the start that the area had been used by other dragons in the past; a few shallow caves in the rockface, improvised trail-markers, and the beginnings of a well all revealed previous passerby's activities. Where many before had seen a place to rest, Toothless saw greater potential. May it also never be said that a Mirror won't pounce when opportunity is before them.
And so the Useless Reptile Clan was founded. (The name came about largely thanks to Toothless' dismissive attitude towards anyone who disagrees with him, as it has become his habit to deem any such dragon a 'useless reptile.' Considering how often these words have been muttered, the clan's accidental christening is of little surprise.) Despite all logic pointing to the fact that the unfortunate monicker is his own doing, Toothless is convinced that it is all somehow Maleficent's fault.
The clan's steady water supply, sturdy shelter, and convenient location for more than a few routes have made it a popular pitstop for many desert-crossing expeditions. Its status as a frequently used crossroads in an otherwise sparsely populated land have drawn merchants and artisans (among others) for miles around to the clan, all eager to buy, sell, and trade. For better or worse, however, the location has little in the way of resources or equipment needed by most craftsdragons. As a result, many dragons have come and gone since the clan was founded (something that suites the Mirror just fine) bringing a diverse set of knowledge, skills, and goods with them. Such wealth has a tendency to attract to all types of dragons, and while most are welcome, the clan has recently developed a problem with bandits skulking about its borders.
This isn't to say that every dragon that joins the clan inevitably leaves it. A few select dragons have decided to make the crossroads their destination rather than a mere stop along their journey. These permanent members make up a more tightly-knit "core" amongst the Useless Reptile Clan's more transient members. These longtime clanmembers generally acknowledge Toothless as the Clan Leader (if only because he started the clan to begin with) though how much control and decision-making power the Mirror actually has varies depending upon the exact situation. This isn't something that usually bothers Toothless too much; Mirror Packs are rather loosely affiliated groups, after all. Still, the Mirror thoroughly enjoys the extra leeway to boss others around that being the "leader" gives him.
