Petal

Petal had always been an adventurer at heart. Ever since he was a hatchling, he’s been known as the first to trailblaze and explore new places. He used to do such things with his two brothers and sisters. He was always their ringleader, much to their mother’s dismay, and often led his siblings off on grand adventures, as deep into the heart of their homeland that they dared to go. They’d pretend they were princes! Pirates! Lords and ladies of the world itself!

“Be careful!” His mother often warned, shepherding him back into the safety of her wings. “You could be carried off, or worse!” But Petal’s wanderlust could never be satisfied. And one fateful day, he finally met his match.

It was a clear and sunny afternoon—the kind that was just too perfect not to roam free and wild. Petal set off alone this time, carrying some parchment and a quill with him to map out all of the new things he found. No detail was left unexamined. So engrossed was he in his adventure, that he didn’t notice the beating of wings until it was too late.

”Gotcha!” came the hissing cry and the young Petal suddenly found himself ensnared in razor-sharp talons. “Baby hatchie makes a nice meal for Blood and Bone!”

It was a huge Aberration dragon, snapping and sneering with two sets of slavering jaws. Petal shrieked in horror and tried to squirm free, but couldn’t. So this was the ”worse” that his mother had warned him about. He braced himself for the end...until another cry split the air and the weight above him suddenly vanished.

Petal landed hard in the dust and looked up to see a second Aberration attacking the first. The two great beasts rolled over and over until with a final hiss of warning, the one that had captured him fled to the skies. Bruised and scared Petal looked up into the eyes of his rescuers. “Don’t be afraid, young one,” the two heads said in unison.
