He's an artist, not anything special in the world but he's kind of dying (every day is another one gone) and there's so much in his head he wants to get out and leave behind to be remembered, and if he doesn't make these particular creations who else will? It's his head they're in. (It's beautiful and he wants others to see and share and know, wants the beauty to exist and to matter.) Works on paper and canvas and cobblestones and walls, in inks and acrylic and varnish and sand, abstract and calligraphy and sculpture and cloudshaping. There's so much beauty that can be added to the world and only his effort and time to get it out in (and it takes so much art to live on)—what's him compared to what he can make? (If he washes off the paint smears, will there be anything left behind?) |

The noncommissioned, private project he works on just for himself (to feed his soul) is cartooning. The centennial skycat migration came through and he dribbled some watercolors and doodled some shapes into an inspiration he named Splotch Pat. Cartoons aren't the same kind of art as everything else he does. There's sequence to it, story, different setup and style. He's still learning it, Splotch Pat's not ready to share with the rest of the world, but in the privacy of his studio and imagination he has the company of a little watercolor doodle gamboling around now: Lapping at his jar of brush-cleaning water, dabbing paws onto his palettes, rolling belly up on used dropcloths and rubbing against wet canvases. Splotch Pat the Artist's Cat, or maybe Splotch Pat the Artist (Cat)... . |

His name's so ordinary he signed his work Just Michael when he started just to add a little bit of distinction, and it worked—it worked so everyone who sees it remembers and refers to him as Just Michael, like it's a whole name, and anyone who calls him for short uses Just, and he... actually, kind of, really likes that. It's unique. Makes him feel special. |
