Papers in a jumble, ink spilled and staining, time ticking. Candles are scattered, the small lights flickering, and their wax drips onto the pages of books, onward to the wooden floor. Shelves of stories and tomes, walls of maps and plans pinned. A globe sits on a desk, seas circling the land and mountains rising strong. Flames grow warm, pages flutter in a breeze.

He sits, staring, breathing, bending. His head rests on his hand, elbow pressing into the desk. The other holds a feathered pen, tapping and writing when not reluctant. His words are nonsense. He twists ebony hair between fingers, curving, knotting. His face buries into hands, and he groans. Finally, he stands, brawny arms pushing, stout legs straightening, thin eyes glaring. He rubs his bearded cheek in defeat and leaves the study. His hand finds a sword as he exits, the candles flicker as the door closes.

His lips in a mutter, brows angled sharp, he grips the sword’s hilt as his knuckles turn white and fingers red. Heavy boots tread along the ground while tapered metal brushes the floor. Black tresses glide behind, braids intertwined, beads strung along. His teeth grind. Slowing to a stop, he stands before a crude wooden mannequin clothed in burlap and stuffed with straw. He kicks it once with a foot, making it spin abruptly, it’s arms flinging towards him, stiff and wide. His wrist blocks it’s attack and he strikes quick, it’s wooden appendage dropping to the floor. The movement turns the dummy again, so he stops it with a hand and plunges his blade deep through it’s side. With the sword’s point shoved out of the other side of the mannequin, he slides it back to himself, sighing away prior frustration.

Others appear behind him, so he brandishes a smile and turns. His head is clear.
