4H6lTYb.png The matriarch of the BrightIce clan RhAgS48.gif
Ellise likes shiny things, especially shiny things that go BOOM.

Ellise grew up clanless in lands controlled by the beastclans. She and her first love, Lucky, built their own clan from nothing when they were young. Eventually it became a prosperous, thriving community, active in the arts, business, and scholarship of all kinds.

All that changed when the emperor attacked. The BrightIce clan was hard hit. Many dragons died and much of what Ellise had worked her whole life to build was destroyed in less than an hour. The clan fled into the shifting expanse, where they recuperated as well as they could until the emperor's immediate threat passed. Now they have returned to rebuild.

During their self-imposed exile, Ellise nearly despaired. She considered giving up, finding another clan that would accept her and her family and leaving the BrightIce clan abandoned. But Evershine never wavered in his commitment to rebuilding, and he and Ellise's friends helped Ellise face the destruction with resolve.

Festival's End (2nd place winner in the 2015 Brightshine creative writing contest! Written by me!)
90CgIOB.jpg The sky still held a little light, but the sun had long since set and stars glittered above the sea. Ellise rested her head on her mate's back to better see out the window. Evershine stirred but didn't wake.

Talk and laughter floated up from the promenade. Despite the late hour, a few booths remained open for the most dedicated revelers--one last game to play, one last prize to win, one last treat to buy. But most of the booths were being dismantled. Ellise heard a muffled crash, followed by laughter. Someone said, "Oops!" and she recognized her friend Saturn's voice. If the big ridgeback was involved, she knew no one would come to any harm. There was no need for her to get up to investigate, which was good because she had no energy to do so.

"What was that?" Evershine muttered.

"Saturn dropped something."

Ellise's mate sighed into the silk bedspread and settled his wings more comfortably. Ellise thought he had fallen back asleep, but he said, "How's Jubilee's tummy ache?"

"I think she's fine now." Ellise looked across the room at their daughter. The hatchling's crystalline hide glinted even in the dim light, where it wasn't hidden by her fangar's fluffy tail. "I still can't believe she ate that entire grasshopper pie. It was almost as big as she was."
"She won a ribbon," Evershine said, laughter in his voice.

"She'd have won first place if that enormous boy from the Terrace hadn't entered. I still say he was older than his mother claimed. He was twice Jubilee's size."

Evershine twined his tail with Ellise's. "It was just for fun."

"Yes, of course. You know how competitive I get." Ellise considered getting up to check on Jubilee, but she didn't want to disturb the hatchling now that she was finally asleep. "I still wonder if I made the right decision about her. It feels like self-indulgence."

"Nonsense. I'm glad she's staying."

As matriarch of her clan, Ellise was expected to send most of her children to serve the Lightweaver. A few left home as hatchlings to act as Light representatives in other lairs. But Jubilee would be staying. Ellise planned to oversee her training as a coliseum healer herself.

She could not stay forever, of course. Next year Jubilee would take her place among the dragons offered to other lairs in exchange for raffle tickets. But for the first time Ellise would be able to watch one of her children grow up.

Soft golden light filled the room. Ellise and Evershine both lifted their heads to look outside. The topmost Beacon tower was in clear view at the top of a nearby hill, and the Lightweaver coasted down to land on it. Even at a distance she was almost too bright to look at directly.

She tilted her head back and spread her vast wings. Spirals of light shot into the sky and exploded into multicolored flowers. Ellise gasped.

"What is it?" Evershine said. "She's never done that before."

"Magic or alchemy. Perhaps both." More of the light flowers bloomed above the trees, accompanied by dull booms as they opened.

"What's that noise, Mama?" Jubilee clambered over Ellise's tail, the rumpled and grubby Good Eater Award ribbon clutched in one paw. "Are fireflies exploding?"

"The Lightweaver is helping us celebrate Brightshine."

Evershine lifted Jubilee so she could sit in the window. "Oof. You're getting big." He kept one wing extended in case she tumbled backwards--her wings were still too small for her to fly.

Ellise joined them at the window. She saw other dragons nearby staring into the sky, oohing and aahing at every new flower of light. Jubilee watched, entranced, until the last bloom faded and the Lightweaver winged away into the night.

"Will she do it again tomorrow?" Jubilee asked.

Ellise said, "No, sweetie. The festival is over now."

"Over?"

Ellise realized that Jubilee, hatched on the first day of the festival, had never known anything else. "Tomorrow will be much quieter than you're used to. We'll go to the training grounds and you can practice your pouncing. Go back to bed now."

Jubilee yawned and curled up with her fangar again. Outside, someone began to sing "The Lightweaver's Lullaby," a new song written by a Wind musician and instantly popular throughout Light.

"Did you have a good festival?" Evershine asked Ellise as they crawled back into their own bed.

In the darkness, Jubilee sang along with the lullaby, but since she didn't know the words she just sang "Lightweaver, Lightweaver," over and over in a pure, clear voice. Her fangar chirruped.

Ellise snuggled close to Evershine, who wrapped his wings around her. "I had a wonderful festival. The best one ever."
