The Padre is a noble ambassador of the Lightweaver, dispatched to the Guild in a show of good will. His utilitarian purpose is to serve them as a scholar, but his true mission is to provide a rare source of succor for the many sufferers of the Chessplayers' fleshly and mental torments. He finds no joy in this dreadful place, and most of the Labyrinth's cruel natives are openly hostile to him, for his duty and presence are sufficient to stir their seething ire, if not their slumbering consciences.

Worst of all, despite their clear displeasure, they refuse to allow him to leave. Perhaps the only reason he has not yet been slaughtered himself by the heartless fiends is because THE ARCHITECT welcomes him, both undeterred and unperturbed by his work and judgment. Rather than taking any comfort from this display of alleged good will, the Padre suspects that it is intended to serve him as a barbed but subtle punishment, cruelly ordained by the most wicked patriarch he has ever encountered.
