Lightning flared across the ocean’s rain-battered surface, thunder roaring as the fanged crests of roiling storm-blown waves were momentarily frozen in light before the gold Ridgeback was plunged back into darkness. She squinted as rain battered her wings and slashed at her eyes. Only a few meters below her, the black waves sent foam spewing at the tips of her wings on every downward stroke. Pavo was tucked safely into a warm pocket of her waterproof coat, but the tiny wyrmpeck’s screeches of protest were drowned out by the rushing water below. There: a tiny red light, blinking slowly, nearly invisible in the turmoil. As Carina flew closer, she could make out the thin metal pylon jutting from the waves. Thirty meters further, she spotted another pylon with a light- yellow this time, blinking in opposite intervals. She felt the tiny body of the wyrmpeck nestle deeper into her pocket as she tilted her wings, then tucked them close and plunged without hesitation into the icy water directly between the markers. The shock of cold was over as quickly as it came, and she blinked her eyes open before the bubbles had dissipated. Even with the illumination provided by her own coat and the emblem hovering over her forehead, it was impossible to make out the sea floor far below. Powerful beats of her wings brought her down to the steeply rising seabed in a matter of seconds, where more tiny blinking lights- this time floating, tied down to the sandy bottom at uniform lengths- guided her to a fissure in the face of a looming stone wall, narrow at the top but widening enough to allow a large dragon to slip through with their wings tucked close. She could make out the pillars now; hundred-meter structures as thick around as she was, tethered to the seabed around the island and surrounded by a strange energy she had never been able to place. As she passed between the nearest two, it felt as if she had shed a layer of dead skin. Magic had a habit of accumulating on dragons like dust under furniture. It was always a relief to pass between them and feel it peeled away from between her scales as easily as tissue paper. The passageway was barely long enough for her to fit her tail in before it took a steep upward turn. Without room to use her wings, her claws scrambled for a hold onto the slick rock walls. With a grunt, she hauled herself up through the passageway, out of the water, and into an air-filled chamber whose heated (and now wet) floor and severe walls gleamed in stark-white light. She cleared her throat loudly. "I’m home, arseholes.” |
