Astra is the progenitor of Clan Clarion, its founder, and its queen. She is fiercely brave, persistent through adversity, and surprisingly maternal; she was the clan's original mother, and it shows in her tolerance towards hatchlings and newcomers. She built the clan as a home for the homeless and is more welcoming than many plague dragons. However, she's no pushover: She has a hot temper that can come out when things don't go her way, and where her opponents are concerned, she's downright ruthless.

She's been through a lot in her life, unsurprisingly for a plague dragon such as herself. Whilst still living in the Abiding Boneyard, she caught a creeping infection, which has been ravaging her body ever since, leaving weeping sores in its wake. She lost her left arm to a particularly serious breakout, but with the help of a prosthetic, is almost as strong as ever. The disease's progression is now kept under control by healer Mayura, along with several herbal concoctions from Chance's garden.

Astra stepped down as matriarch of the clan that was hers not long before its first big disaster, leaving the post to another Guardian named Akiko, whom she had mentored. It was shortly after this change when the clan was half-destroyed, half-scattered by the appearance of an Emperor dragon, which entirely obliterated the lair. The remnants of the clan fled to the Southern Icefield.

She suffered no further physical wounds in the Icefield, but was hit with the mental and emotional blow of betrayal of her own mate, fellow progenitor, and her charge: Nestor. He teamed up with a powerful mage and a beguiling scientist to try to take over the clan, wanting back the power he lost when Astra stepped down. When their operation failed, the clan instead split into two factions. Akiko was killed in the initial attack, leaving Astra to guide her daughter Eilidh through leading their faction.

While Astra's heart was broken by Nestor's betrayal, her plague instincts soon kicked in: She had been caring for the sick Fae for most of her life, and his condition was still worsening. Her faction had an advantage, one which they used for the entirety of the cold war between them. Eventually, it was Astra's patience and the overconfidence of the scientist Charna which ended the war: Astra waited while Charna destroyed herself.

With the clan reunited, and led jointly by Eilidh and Kina, Astra took a step back from leadership and settled back into being an advisor, this time without Nestor at her side. He and the mage, Taika, were allowed to stay with the clan, but their freedoms were limited. Astra prides herself on having given them mercy, but really, could never have brought herself to hurt her charge.

When that last winter in the Icefield never ended, Astra left Kina and Eilidh to decide where to go next. Kina had chosen the Icefield, and it had served them well for a long time; she trusted in his choices. The Hewn City wasn't what she'd imagined, but she quickly settled in; once their lair was built, life became easy. No more damp, dripping caves and struggling for healing supplies when Mayura's surgery is a warm, draught-free building and the dens are filled with fluffy pillows.

Very recently, Astra, Eilidh, Kina, Nestor, and several other dragons disappeared from the main lair and into a new den, buried deep in the dry rock underneath. No one yet knows why, or whether they even had a choice: They appear hypnotised. But Astra smiles in her sleep, dreaming of shade on a warm day.
