Sometimes to find yourself, you have to lose yourself first- and that’s exactly what Ilse did. Born on the windswept plateau, she never felt that she fit in quite right, so she decided to set out on a journey of self discovery. She lost as much as she could, freeing herself from the bonds of a home that never felt quite like home. She lost her family, her friends, her belongings and everything else that helped to define her as a dragon.
Sometimes you have to walk away- and that’s exactly what she did. The first steps were scary, borderline terrifying. She had no idea where she would go, or what she would do, but she took those first steps nevertheless. And step by step, she began to understand what it meant to be independent. She traveled the sea of a thousand currents, flying over expanses of deep blue sea, the extent of which she never could have imagine existed. She had heard the sea was massive, but this was something else. She traveled through the tangled woods, pine needles crunching underfoot as she stalked through, becoming literally lost this time; but she found herself, found her way. The sunbeam ruins were more beautiful than she could have ever imagined, and the shifting expanse brought her joy and wonder- but none of them felt like home. None of them felt like her.
Sometimes you find yourself in other people- and that’s exactly what happened to her. The small skydancer, alone on the border of the sea of a thousand currents and the windswept plateau during the end of her trip. She had no name and no memory of home, so Ilse called her Adley, and then called her her daughter. The harsh winter air called for shelter, and Ilse found it quickly, taking the new hatchling under her wing and keeping her close by her side. She managed a makeshift nest under a cliffs overhang, sheltered enough to keep them safe and warm. She hunted for her daughter and took great care to protect her and raise her well. And soon enough, they established a more permanent nest within a nearby hollow.
Sometimes home is where you make it- and Ilse found herself happy to make this place her new home.
