This is for the best. I’ll be damned to the undergrounds before I allow this kingdom or myself to become anything like how those scoundrels ruled.”

The only things that fill the sky are sickly colors of yellow and orange, the ideas of a blue sky foreign to those who were born and raised in the Wasteland. For as long as the Mirror had lived, he had never seen the sky’s color change, but in that way, knowing it would always be there was almost comforting, in the way only a dragon of plague could see it as. And it was pretty if you squinted. It had been the same color when he had been finally let free into the town of his kingdom, escaping his parents' claws for once. The land was nothing but a disgusting desert, the pools that surrounded it being enough to make you sick by merely circling it. Yet, he didn’t think of that. The only thing he saw was freedom. And he came to like it so much, he knew he had to have more.

So he stained his claws with the blood of the tyrants he called his “parents”, the color that exact shade of red that filled the sky that day, to allow everyone else in the kingdom to share his freedom. There were minor objections to his rule, oh, of course, there were. But most of that was equated to the rumors that filled the air, of him being a murderer. And maybe he was, but it was for the sake of allowing the kingdom to flourish. It was necessary, and soon enough, people did begin to understand that. He was a king, through and through, even when he had contracted that… illness. (He had contracted it during an expedition, and at once thought to be a simple disease, it followed him for his whole life; he would literally deem it to be a sign of his “lordship”, once the emblem of plague had manifested across his head- a blessing he would compare to as the permanent scars across his scales.)

How many days had it been since passing out in the dry land of the Abiding Boneyard? His sense of time had been obscured, his only knowledge of it being from the Guardian who had taken him in to nurse him back to health, and even she could not tell how long he had been lying there before she had found him. All he knew was it had been too long- and he couldn’t stay any longer.
"It is time I head back,” the Mirror had told Ripplewing when she had come back from hunting.

To his surprise, she had not tried to convince him to stay back- rather, she had smiled, and bowed her head, uttering a simple statement. “Then I will come with you.”

And, well, it’s hard to say no to a dragon like that, Crimson soon found.
