Because of his prestigious role, he is privy to all the matters within the kingdom. The Vermillion Sovereign relies on him to oversee the kingdom's economic policies and communications. He is the heir apparent to the Golden Scales clan.

Shi goes about his daily tasks with impeccable calmness. Few court officials can claim to have seen him upset: at most, he has only ever furrowed his brow in frustration before continuing on. However, he is not a kind individual. Shi shows no mercy for anyone who might betray the kingdom, swiftly dealing with a potential traitor before they can even strike. He is rather unpopular with the citizens due to his difficult nature.

As the heir apparent to the Golden Scales Clan, Shi was raised by expectations. He was to marry the daughter of the Sovereign, he was to learn the art of calligraphy and debate, he was to be dressed cleanly at all times, he was to show no mercy to their enemies - there was no end to the demands. From time to time, young Shi had an inkling of a suspicion that his upbringing was hurting him. Such thoughts were never realised and quickly squashed before he could act on them.

Trivia:
- His given name is Shanlao. No one has ever called him by this except his elders.
- His only hobby is raising carp.
