Biography

G A Z A R D I E L
Food stockpiler and Architect

udCcAHz.gif

Gazardiel doesn't exactly have a temper - it would be hard to push him to shout or snap, but he has little patience and a grumpy tone.
Gazardiel is largely in charge of the clan's food stockpile, but also concerns himself with the larger organisation of the clan and takes it as a very serious duty. Many of the youngest dragons scatter when they hear him clomping down the corridors to wave the foraging rota around. They often find however he is a fine tutor and mentor for their studies.

His chamber is a very tidy and plain - one large cushion nest serves as his bed and a few stacks of books serve as shelves and tables for other sundry objects. Largely a pessimistic dragon, most of the clan keep their distance with Gazardiel and know little about him. When he is relaxed he is quite cheerful but most wouldn't know this as he is rarely relaxed.
He is particularly fond of his Owlcat familiar, who often predicates his arrival. He spends evenings alone, reading old tomes he describes as 'jolly thrilling' and 'rousing mysteries', people often disappear before he gets to discuss their plots. Studious hatchlings will often listen to him read them out, once they gather up the courage to ask. The clan book club is somewhat of a legend amongst many that believe Dioxippe is making it up, as Gazardiel is fussy with invites; but it does exist and meets regularly in the lower chambers, though members may not admit it.

Gazardiel used to be a bit more cheery but those who were his friends made their way from the clan or exalted themselves, so he feels a bit detached from the newcomers and the modern running of the clan. He is quite old and doddery, as well as too proud to admit he is bad at making new friends.
One of the founders, he was vital to the starting of the glass works, and is quietly proud of the fact. He planned every inch of the architecture of the original lair, of course more cave networks have been dug but the glassworks and main structure was entirely planned by him; from the south facing Guard's post and roof garden, to the winding warren of dead ends and loops of the Hatchling areas. Whilst there is always teasing of the elders, the adults always make sure the hatchling know of the contributions he's made.

A banded owlcat sits on the lip of the roof garden, near the pear orchard, preening itself. Two hatchlings bound over each other in a flurry of tag before halting before the familiar; it remains unphased, clicking it's beak as it yawns.
"Uh oh." One tundra pup gulps and looks over to his brother,
"Uhhhh ohhh." The other echoes before they start to pad away.
From behind them, Oupis winds out between the trees and cocks her head, "Why are we 'oh no-ing', little ones?"
The hatchlings frown at each other, "That's Gazardiel's owlcat."
"So?" Oupis tilts her head further. "Gazardiel is a funny old dragon, I don't see why you should fear him."
"Gazardiel isn't funny he's... er..."

Before the tundra could elaborate, Gazardiel marches out from the spiral stair case to the roof, darting his head to-and-fro.

"PROFESSOR CRUMBLES! PROFESSOR CRUMBLES?!"
The old tundra cups his paws over his lips and yells, sending the roof chickens scattering. Oupis frowns briefly, before smiling at the hatchling's disbelief.
The hatchlings try to hold back snorts, The owlcat trills to itself but doesn't move. Gazardiel finally spots his familiar and arrives to pluck him off the wall and into his own paws.

"What are you looking at? Can't an old dragon return his familiar to his study without judgement?"
"S-sure, sorry!" The first hatchling stifles, "What do you need, er, the good Professor for?"
"We always have tea around this time," He says curtly, hoisting the purring pet further into his arms, "you're welcome to join us."
Oupis nudges the hatchlings after him as he walks away, whispering that he reads very dramatic and often spooky bed time stories, if they are brave enough to enter the dragon's lair...
