Biography
Caide Whateley
Lonesome Fisherman
-He/him, unclear
-For as long as most of the current population of the Starwood Strand remembers, Caide has always been here. You've always been able to see him out on his little boat in the small hours of the evening or through-out the long nights, catching fish that never seem to be sold. On the odd jarring occasion, you may have even bumped into him in town, carrying out mundane everyday chores like any other dragon. If you ask, some of the older folks will tell you that Caide travelled here from the Scarred Wasteland across the pond, back during the old days when the peace treaty between them and the Viridian Labyrinth was first broken and there was talk of war on the horizon. Though the days are peaceful now, Caide has remained and continued his fishing. There's many stories floated around about him by the local hatchlings - he's secretly a mermaid, or a spirit, or the Lord of the Tides himself, he's some kind of people eating monster, he only fishes at night because he can't go in the sun - but it's all complete nonsense. Yeah, sure, maybe he does look a little odd, but he's an old timer from the Scarred Wasteland. That's a given. He'll tell you if you ask that he only fishes at night because it's peaceful, the other boats have stopped for the day and the fish feel safe to come out. Why does he never sell his catches? Because that's dinner for him and the neighbours. The leftovers are kept for the months where food grows sparser (he has an excellent recipe for spicy pickled blacksaddle wrasse or broadstripe uaru jerky). He's just a guy and it wouldn't be the same in town without him. So, that's why it's so troubling that as of late he's started talking about leaving town for clearer waters....
-Caide is generally a rather lonesome figure, keeping largely to himself when he's out and about with very few in town who really interact with him regularly. Those who do rarely stick around for particularly long conversations, as he's always just naturally been something of a man of few words. A good listener who'll lend an ear if you want him to, certainly, but he'll mostly offer just simple half-grumbled responses or that vague grunt of acknowledgement older men do. He's incredibly honest when he does so too. If he doesn't like you or want to interact, he has no issue telling you up front that he has no interest in sticking around then leaving as soon as he's said his part. But if he likes you, then he may offer something more. Not much, but in his old age, he's become a very wise man and is happy to offer a bit of insightful advice where he sees fit. Caide does like to be helpful where he can. If all that takes is lending someone a bit lost a few thoughtful words, then he has words. But being wise means being able to tell when there's trouble on the horizon. These new faces in the Starwood Strand promise only trouble. Is it any coincidence that the fish have grown sparser and sparser in their presence? The rapid growth of their town has attracted ill-intent and he has no desire to stay in their false assurances of safety.
