The first hatchling was an accident, really.

Merle carefully works the figure between his talons, smoothing the edges down and running his claws along details to sharpen them before firing. His candle flickers faintly—he’d been sculpting for hours. An owl shrieks outside of his open window, tolling the hour.

His claws are getting tired. Merle studies his creation: a miniature imperial, formed from soft gray clay. Perhaps a bit lopsided.

Ah, well. He’ll fire it overnight.

He shuts his kiln, resting a talon upon the top and calling upon the magic within his claws. Just a little bit, enough to heat the clay.

Well. It was only supposed to be a little bit.

When Merle opens the kiln in the morning, the last thing he expects to see is two pale eyes, staring back at him.

“Mrrp?”

The first of Merle’s creations, blessed with life by a fluke of magic. Elo inherited only a small portion of earthborne magic from Merle, but his natural curiosity and great love of books are certainly in imitation of his father. (He didn’t inherit his bad eyesight, thankfully…) Elo spends most of his time reading in his father’s library, or swimming in the warm seas outside of Lanternlea.
