Agates are a type of quartz that form inside cavities of volcanic rocks. These cavities are created by trapped gases in the liquid volcanic material. 		ZE3vWpE.png

When water with a high concentration of silica flows into these cavities, it forms a silica gel that deposits on the walls of the cavity.

The silica gel then crystallizes into layers of microcrystals that create the patterns of agates.
