Their curiosity had gotten the better of them and despite their extensive training, Scipio had made a mistake. The dark scars along their arms still burned, throbbing with their heartbeat. They could sense the beast lurking somewhere deep within them, for the blood running through their veins had been tainted. Corrupted by the very darkness they fought so hard to destroy. How had it come to this? The bottles of Shade that they collected rattled on the shelves. . . Three of them falling and shattering against the stone floor.

Scipio had been a hunter of the Shade, a War Seer who devoted their life to tracking and eradicating that infinite darkness that plagued the world. The Cathedral of Eyes had made them curious and in their pursuit of knowledge they had been snared like a fish hooked to a line and dragged towards their fate.

“Everything here is under our control. . . And the Shade is no exception”.

Those words echoed in Scipio’s mind. There were many who could trap and influence the Shade, few who held the power to destroy it, but never had they met anyone capable of outright controlling it. So, when a golden door appeared before them and a voice whispered, asking what they sought, Scipio inquired.

The golden one had laughed. “The secret to controlling the Shade lies within. If the Shade is a part of you, then how easy it is to manipulate! Just like moving your own hand!”

“How does the Shade become a part of someone?”

“There are many ways. You must choose carefully, for none are without sacrifice.”

Now the full moon rose and with it, Scipio’s heart raced. They groaned as their scales parted, fur pushing its way past their skin. Their breath came in ragged huffs between their sharpening teeth and their eyes flashed darkly. They has been lied to. Now that they had bound themselves to a beast imbued with the Shade, they found out just how difficult it was to remain in control.

The Shade from the bottles swirled around them as their transformation completed. Instead of a Skydancer, what stood in Scipio’s place was a monstrous ashen beast. The Shade flickered around them, flashing like eyes as it rippled past. Their roar could be heard echoing through the halls and they were trapped, a prisoner in their own body as the beast wrought its havoc.

Nadir returned wearily to the War Seer’s chambers and while it was satiated with the night, Scipio remained distraught. They had witnessed this beast take several lives with their own shared claws. Finally, Nadir’s control over their form began to fade, the full moon setting in the sky.

Scipio wept as their form shrunk, fangs and claws receding. Yet in that moment, right before the beast completely slipped away inside of them, the Shade danced around Scipio’s own will and from it they resolved to re-create the life that the beast had stolen.

The first of the Shade-borne children opened their eyes and Scipio stared in shock and wonder. These children were made from the Shade in combination with Scipio’s own flesh and blood. They could sense the dark essence of Nadir within the children as well and Scipio wondered what each of these children would grow to become.
