Deep in the undersea cave network between the Tangled Wood and Dragonhome, there are paths well-worn by the passage of traders and adventurers, dragons and beastclan alike. These routes are lit by the soft purple glow of potted deepmine fungi and the reflection on the walls from the rippling of water, but along them are off-shoots--unmapped tunnels, deliberately overlooked by those who planted the fungi generations ago. Most dragons ignore them, doing little more than raising their guard as they pass the shadow-filled mouths. Not all though. It is in one of these caverns that Oleander lives, and works. When the Tidelord disappeared, nearly 80 years ago, most dragons with the gift for divination lost the connection to the great prophecy giver. The water flight grew desperate, many seers revealing their rituals in hopes any other dragons could reach the Tidelord. In parallel, dragons across the world began developing their own methods of foresight. While no one could reach the lost sea god, prophecies came anyways--more obscure, less certain, but prophecies nonetheless. But not all of these methods are safe, and Oleander was one who paid the price of brushing minds with unknown forces. They had grown lost in the caverns, and attempted divination to find their way out. But the creature they had reached out to was a Shade horror, and their mind twisted with the connection. They lost much of their sense of reality, wandering ever deeper ever away from the established path out to the surface world. Their home became the dead end of a twisting cavern, where a pool of murky water was fed from the slow drip of a stalactite, never clearing. There, deep down beneath the deceivingly-shallow depths, the Shade horror was chained. Whenever Oleander, half delirious, reached out for prophecy, the horror sapped some of their energy and gave them inexplicable knowledge. Those who pass too close to the mouth of their tunnel can hear them whisper, unintelligible at such a distance--though sometimes, even unintelligible up close. The bravest, or most foolish, venture into the dark, to receive an omen from the Guardian who refuses to leave the depths.
