━ Crimes: ━ Trying to manipulate an old flame into managing her Flight, I suppose. And then roping a hatchling into it all. ━ Questions: ━ Why can't she just speak against isolationism herself? And why didn't she tell Asuka about their hatchling sooner? ━━━━━━━━━━━━ (Layout by Mask) |
━ NOTES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I learned about Chiron's half brother when I was living in that dugout by the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Chiron was more open with me then, and even made it a point to update me with news whenever he visited. At one point, when Chiron visited to bring me some newspapers, but he didn't give me his usual updates about the continent. Instead, he settled down by the fire and launched into a bizarre story about flight politics and how he just learned that he had a younger half-brother in the Southern Icefields. Apparently, it all started when Chiron received a scroll addressed to Asuka. Seeing that his father was dead and not likely to respond, Chiron took it upon himself to read the letter. It was from an Iceflighter named Petrovna. Petrovna, apparently, had some problems. First, the Ice Flight as a whole was so enraged by overfishing, threats of foresting, and "invasive and harmful attitudes" that were poising the youth, that the Flight elders were just one incident away from closing boarders and declaring all outflighters as invaders. Petrovna argued that this would be horrible decision for many reasons, but she stressed that the isolation would be worse for the hatchlings. Young dragons would mature without awareness and education, she argued, and one of those young dragons was her son. Her son and Asuka's. She wrote that if Asuka came and argued the case to the Flight Elders, his persuasiveness and political clout would change their minds. He had the moral responsibility to serve the flight, she said. She didn't want anything else for their son, she said. Just this one thing. |
Chiron was perplexed and desperately wanted my advice. Should he answer Petrovna's call on behalf of his late father, or let the Ice Flight take care itself? If he left without permission, he could risk facing the wrath of his boss. But if he ignored the letter, he would never meet his younger brother and leave him trapped behind flight boarders.
I discouraged him from going, or even replying to the scroll. I needed him to protect me, and besides, the letter wasn't even for him.
"Do you really think that Asuka could have done it?" I asked. "Turn the attitude of an entire flight?"
"He... I don't know."
"He couldn't. Asuka was good, but not that good. This problem has been building for generations, and you wouldn't stand a chance."
Chiron still didn't look convinced, so I pressed harder.
"Asuka couldn't do it," I affirmed. "And if Asuka couldn't do it, neither can you."
Chiron didn't respond and I thought I'd done it. I'd convinced him to stay like a good boy, and nothing would change.
Well, Chiron didn't listen to me.
He went to the Icefields. He argued that the boarders should remain open, and just as I predicted, he failed.
He managed to keep one promise to Petrovna, though. He brought Kyosta, the brother, with him when he left. Chiron has since become increasingly reticent with me, so I'm not sure what he, Petrovna, or Kyosta thinks of whole situation, but I'm willing to bet that at least one of them deeply resents it.
