When the time is right, swarms of young queens and male ants will go on what is called a nuptial flight. During this flight, queens and males from different colonies will mate. Afterwards, the males die and the queens will attempt to found a new colony. With dangers pressing in on all sides, not all of these queens will make it past this search, many of which dying before they can even find a suitable new home. This does not need to be the case, however. Instead, some species of ants will instead choose to invade the nests of other colonies, killing their queen and taking over the egg-laying. The existing ants will carry on as if nothing happened, feeding the invader queen and taking care of her young as they slowly take over the nest.

The Spiral had only begun to take notice that Seliana was planning something after the house had been taken over. Nests of ants had burrowed themselves into every nook and cranny of his house to the point where they covered every surface like a carpet. It didn't take much longer after that for things to reek of dead ants as they ate everything the house had to offer. Piles of dead carcasses stacked in the corners. Crawler was forced to sleep on the roof as the pattering feet and worsening stench became too much to bear. Eventually, he avoided going back inside altogether.

On the day of the new moon, however, something felt different. There was an eerie sense of stillness, and the scent of rot no longer seeped through the windows. And so, for the first time in almost a week, Crawler opened the door.

Other than the damage, the house was clean, almost cleaner than it had been before the whole incident. A stray spider and centipede occasionally scuttled across the floor, yet for the first time since Seliana's "arrival" things were in a state of calm and quiet. In the back corner, a clutch of eggs rested against each other. Crawler considered them further. The surface was mottled and lumpy, and he could still see the outline of a deceased ant's shell in certain places. Was this her plan? To spread more of her monstrous blood? Crawler didn't want to see more dragons end up like him but... they were not even born yet. They would be monsters, yes, but they would be children, children who didn't know better. If anything, it would be his responsibility to make sure they never harmed anyone. And so, rather than crushing the fabricated shells, the Spiral curled around them gently, waiting for them to hatch.

Parasites are not motivated by greed or malice, rather that their survival is only possible through these means. For the intruding queen, there is no other choice but sabotage, and without it there won't be a chance for her bloodline to continue. Nature, in her strange ways, has decreed this path for them. There is no choice. There cannot be a choice.
