During the night, when the winds rage and the moon shines cold and bright beyond the rolling black clouds of winter, fear comes to creep into the souls of dragons. It snakes through treetops, riding their frantic motions, slips under and into the cracks of dens to wriggle and worm its way inside – poisoning hearths, freezing shadows, and letting me in.

Dark smoke spills from my jaws, drifting down to roll along the floor and freeze the earth beneath my claws – a stark contrast to my pale, glacial eyes, which hold the depths of ice and snow, the peaks of mountains, within them. My wings are vaporous, silver and shining, and my mane is achromatic.

I am the storm.

I am the blizzard which cloaks the dawn, the fallstreak which brings terror to adults and hatchlings alike. I send snows to gust through the land. I coax icicles to grow, flowers to freeze, sunlight to wane. But I am more than simple temperature – I am that which steals the breath of younglings before their prime. I am the birth of all sickness and disease, all weakness that turns the scales of dragons pale and gray. I am that which they fear.

I am ruthless, apathetic, and gelid. I feel no sympathy for those who succumb under my gaze. Mountains crumble beneath my tempests. Seas surge in response to my call. I do not wane for anything, nor slow for anyone –

Pride, what do you think you’re doing? Are you monologuing about glaciers again? Come now, little one. It’s almost dark; off we go!

…I am forced to respond to my caretaker on a daily basis, despite my immense power.
