Just the right blend of witty, social and sarcastic, Xanqian works odd jobs for dragons settled around and within the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. He has a definite allure to him that makes him appealing to most dragons, though whether this is due to magic or his own charisma is a mystery. Either way, he's friendly and smart, and gets along with anyone. It's certainly odd, then, that he chooses not to make friends...

A night breeze sweeps through the courtyard of the amphitheatre, surprisingly warm considering the time of year. Qian lifts his head skyward, inhaling the scent of rough sand and dangerous rot. A breeze from the neighbours, huh?
He sends this vague thought down the link to Persica, and she laughs sleepily from a thousand wingbeats away. That was me, actually. I've got a really big leaf I'm fanning myself with. She passes him a comedic vision of her lounging on the sand under the shade of the Seedscar, a magically-enchanted leaf waving up and down next to her prone form. The image is a little warped: she's tired. Dragons of the Plague flight sleep at night and wake at dawn, unlike dragons here.
He lets his amusement at the image filter through the link, and then turns back to the job at hand. He's no warrior. This is something he has to be careful with.

He's left the link open, and as he sets traps all over the moon-silvered arena he catches a stray thought from Persica. She's close to sleep now, watching his movements through the link, and she thinks to herself I can fight. I'd protect you.
He carefully keeps his reaction away from the link. Go to sleep, Pers. She grumbles unintelligibly but falls silent; peering down their connection, he feels rather than sees the way she curls up and passes out in seconds. It's... markedly difficult to return to work after that, but he manages.
The last trap, a nasty thing with huge metal "jaws" and a chain big enough to fell a giant sea monster, glints wickedly in the moonlight, pristinely polished. The gaoler who hired him wasn't messing around. Qian remembers the hollow look in her eyes, and shivers involuntarily. The warm desert breeze tickles at his ears: nearby, the trees grown out of cracks in the huge stone steps rustle, dark leaves trembling.

He doesn't usually do jobs like this. He likes interacting with others. Working as a team. Learning about social behaviours common for each breed, and how a dragon's inborn flight changes their mindset. (Persica is a useful example of the casual toughness of Plague dragons. She loves to travel. She loves the desert. She loves elementalism and life, using her veilspun magic to shape the elements Sornieth is built upon. And she doesn't seem violent at all. And yet, she is deadly.) So he wouldn't have accepted the disheveled gaoler's offer, if not for one thing: he's been running low on treasure lately.
(Building things is costly. He's mentioned the sheer price on some of the items he's bought to Persica, and she pesters him about what he's doing any time she can. But he won't tell her. Not yet.)
Anyways, the point is that he's pretty much broke by now, and he still needs a way to buy food and things! The gaoler had offered so much treasure as a reward for just putting up some traps that he'd accepted the commission instantly. Now, in the silent amphitheatre, he's beginning to quietly regret his decision.
Oh, well. His job is done. He can return to civilisation. He's been dreaming about the smoked fish he'll buy with his payment for days.

As the glittering veilspun alights into the sky and swoops away, there is a disturbance further down in the arena, where the floor slopes into the bay. The inky waves shiver, lapping further up onto the beach of smooth-cut stone. Little eddies of black swirl around a central point, where something large slides through the water.
A pale blue fin clears the water for a moment. Ridged with black, it glitters with a thousand jewelled dewdrops. Cuts through the swell. Then, like a phantasm, it is gone.
