▬▬▬▬▬▬▬xxbiography.

"Again."

His father's voice rang in his ears as Eryle lifted his sword in the direction of a straw bale with a red target haphazardly painted onto it. Launching himself into a sprint, he aimed his blade with precision and plunged it into the centre of the target, letting his grip fall away when he was sure the sword would not clatter to the ground.

"Good," Eros murmured, making his way towards his son. With a steady hand, he swiftly removed the sword and placed it into the sheath he wore around his waist. "I think that's enough training for today. Let's move, it's getting late." The sun that was once seated high above them when they first came to the training grounds of the Earthen Expedition suddenly disappeared behind the mountains, the loss of its glow painting the skies with shades of amber and rose. Ever since Eryle had shown the slightest interest in combat when he was a hatchling, even if that interest was watching members of their clan's Sentry spar, Eros was determined to train him. Given the fact that he was second in command of the Sentry, he was more than pleased to bring his son to the training grounds when he could.

After hiking briefly through the sandy landscape that encompassed them, the two dragons returned to the Earthen Expedition's centre. Situated on the edge of a ravine, it was a bustling community of dragons either adjusting to the desert lifestyle or completely at home amid the dust. The smell of freshly cooked meat and the chattering of various dragons discussing their days overwhelmed Eryle's senses. It was a sharp contrast from the stillness of the grounds where he spent his days, that much was certain. The two made their way toward the section of the camp their family had chosen to settle in, the fabric of their tents rustling in the desert wind. But there was something on Eryle's mind, something he had been refraining from asking for some time now.

"Father," Eryle spoke, his curiosity finally getting the better of him. "How come you've always insisted on training me?" Is it because you want me to join the Sentry like you? To defend important dragons in the Expedition? In Sanctuary?"

Eros gave his son a warm smile before placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Of course not, my boy. I want you to be whoever and whatever you want to be. But I do want you to be able to defend yourself and those around you if necessary."

"But why?" Eryle pressed. If there was ever a time to have an honest conversation about his training with his father, it was now.

"Because our clan has a great amount of enemies, Eryle," Eros replied gravely, his reassuring look transforming into a solemn frown. "There are individuals, whole clans even- who could do us harm simply because they are able to. It is our duty- my duty as a member of the Sentry- to protect ourselves and those we care about. If the time comes where you find yourself in a situation that carries a great amount of risk, I want you to be able to escape it with your life." Eros patted his son's shoulder gently. "But you shouldn't have to worry about that for a while. You still have a great deal of training to complete before I could begin to picture you fighting at my side."

As the two continued toward their shelter, his father's words were still ringing in Eryle's head. It certainly wasn't the response he was imagining, but the graveness of it all began to weigh heavily on him. As if he was able to sense the growing dread within his son's mind, Eros stopped Eryle before he could move into their shelter, turning to face him.

"You should also realize that I train you because you have shown me potential. I have no doubt that if you continue your training with the same drive that you presented this evening, you could surpass me one day."

Eryle's eyes widened in surprise as his father's words filled him with purpose. Eros smiled, knowing his words likely inspired his son more than he anticipated them to.

Wordlessly, the two entered their tent as the sun finally slipped below the horizon, the sky aglow with starlight. It was time for rest, for the cycle would begin again the next morning.
