twenty years have passed since the two stars crashed in a flurry of flame, twenty years a dragon of burnt bronze spent fizzling itself into life. in the wake of her first breath, she burst forth her song of these stars, ugly and crackling and full of holes. when he pulls melodies from the atmosphere, he doesn't waste time morphing them into something pretty. it is honesty and it hurts. she sings malady into her den, rips apart attachments with the ants. there is always a terrible flaw between two beings; if one is an angel, the other must be the monster under dove feathered sheets.

he meets grace with these wretched songs staining her teeth and grace buries them because she is better than words. it is so young, younger than the dirt, and ever older than the black behind her eyelids. grace knows of dealing with eggs and exaltees. it is petulant and spiteful more than either.

and yet.

here it is home, where everything is ice like before the flames burnt everything he knew. because the flake is young, old, and beneath the stars she can pretend her brothers can see him from here. they will mellow out with time, but in these years the universe has venom to spit, and here is a mouth to siphon it.
