one for sorrow

"I've paid for my crimes,
and I've unlied my lies,
and now I'm adorned
with a clever disguise"

If the world had any sense of justice, her first steps inside the Monastery would have been the last thing she ever did. A shadow of the Ridgeback she is now, she was practically skeletal, wild-eyed and above all else, desperate. The kind of desperation that pulls you further into the same trouble you're trying so hard to get away from. Her gaunt frame made her footsteps light, and the night was dark enough to act as a shroud. A stealthy entrance into the Monastery was all but confirmed. As she slipped through the clan grounds, a wayward stomach growl threatened to betray her presence. In her mind, she had come to terms with the fact that this night would either end with her belly full, or sliced open. At that moment, she would be satisfied with either outcome. When she had finally arrived at the foodstores, she silently slipped open a barrel lid, and peered inside. A sense of relief washed over her. It was then did her pursuers make themselves known, stepping out from the shadows of the entrance she just passed through. Their steps were light, calm and confident. She turned around to face her company.

There were two of them, well built, tall figures, facial details difficult to discern in the scant moonlight. But the emaciated Ridgeback wasn't concerned - after all, this was partly why she chose to target the old Monastery. There were plenty of other much smaller clans nearby, with a fraction of the security of this one. But a Monastery? They would have the good graces to show her mercy and let her away with enough food to survive another night at least. Hell, they might even give her a bed to stay in till the morning. The guards smiled politely as she recounted her sorry tale, and the unfortunate lows her circumstances had reduced her to. When she had finished, they each drew their blades. "Crap."

Trajan watched from a distance as the situation escalated. She didn't fight particularly well. She clearly never received formal training. Against just a couple of the Monastery Guard, her situation was hopeless. In a few short minutes, it would be over. As Trajan looked into her eyes, sunken deep into her skull, he saw that she knew this too. Nevertheless, she fought back with all the ferocity of a cornered beast. Unrefined, savage, desperate. But if this beast had a master...? It occurred to him, then and there, that perhaps the best opportunity the High Chimera would ever have, was bleeding out before his eyes. At his command, the guards relented. Trajan made a proposition to the Ridgeback. Her crime would be forgiven, if she vowed to never show the same mercy to another. Any who made themselves an enemy of the Monastery, no matter how insignificant or atrocious their crime, would answer to her. She would be their life sentence. Knowing still that this night would end either with her belly full or sliced open, she barely considered her answer. She nodded in assent. Trajan never bothered with knowing her real name. Right then and there, he christened her anew. "Your name is Deliverance, and you are the final arbiter of any who attempt to escape the judgement of this sacred clan."

Deliverance has no regard for laws or moral codes. Her only concern is whatever Trajan commands. He pulled her from the brink of death that night, offering her something more than just survival. He freed her from the harsh, unrelenting struggle of her old life. He gave her shelter, stability, purpose, duty. When hunting down those she is told to, she takes great pride in extending the same gift to them that Trajan extended to her. Freedom from it all.

[ notes ]
» Unfriendly and cold, even by High Chimera standards.
» Cares for nothing but her job.
» Unwaveringly loyal to Trajan.
» She has become known as an omen of death when seen outside the Monastery.
» Flanked always by her manticore companion, Absolution.
