ailuros is not notable before she finds the amber pendant in the caverns below the shattered plain. she had been content to live in dragonhome, to explore the tunnels, to map them as best she can, and not abandon the place she had been born the way her older sisters had. she cared greatly about the dragons that raised her, she loved the land she had walked her whole life. but when she found the necklace, and the spectral feline bound to it, her world changed. her sense of awareness of the world around her heightened. she could name creatures she'd never known, innately find the best path through difficult terrain. and the cat itself had a peculiar sense for danger. namely, for dragons nearby in need of help. ailuros' help. ailuros left gem's rest solely in the aid of those in need, finding dragon after dragon--from lost fae hatchlings to imperials needing just a touch more strength to win their battles. she had not meant to leave home, really, but as soon as she helps one person the cat finds another, and her quest pulls her farther across sornieth than she had ever imagined.

ailuros was the last of her sisters to leave home, a fact which surprised her parents. she had a natural wanderlust, and if dumi and zelena had placed bets on which of their newest clutch would leave first, they both would have agreed on ailuros. but no, ailuros remained when her older sisters both left without a word in the night. it was a lonely thing, to lose the two dragons who had been raised alongside you, especially when you had been so close. ailuros grows more reserved, spends more time in the caverns, explores alone. she is careful, but she is gone for days or even weeks at a time, mapping the tunnels beneath gem's rest. it is on one of these long treks that she discovers the cavern of treasures. faint light that she follows through a pool of water, up into another cavern, through a squeeze, and into a smal but crowded room. there are piles of coins, older mints than she recognizes, with symbols from all flights. there are statues and jewelry and paintings, of creatures both familiar and strange. the sconces on the wall still burn, but dust covers everything. and in the center of the room on a small raised pedestal is a large amber pendant, cradled by faded wire and attached to a copper chain. it glows beautifully in the light, the flames dancing across it in such a way that it seems like shapes move within the stone. before she has any time to process the movement of her own claws, she has slipped the necklace around her frills to let it settle along her neck. there is a flash, a fraction of a second long, and she blinks--and before her is a small spotted cat. spectral, staring at her, eyes unblinking. her claws feel sharper, she can sense the nearest forest, she could point out the cardinal directions dizzy and with her eyes closed, and she can feel a small silent presence in the corner of her mind. but she finds she cannot remove the necklace. and as she leaves the treasure trove, back down into the pool she came through, the entrance seals up as if it had never been there at all. and the cat remains, phantasmal and floating, bound to the amber. when she returns home the clan's elders tell her the necklace is an archaic form of binding a familiar to a dragon, but they cannot explain the enhancements it seems to have given her. she tries speaking to the cat, getting nothing in return. she continues mapping the caverns, part of her hoping to find the treasure again. months pass before the presence in her head speaks. it is indeed the cat. it tells her its name, and gives nothing more of itself. it says there is someone near in trouble, and as ailuros tries to work through the fear of being told of a dragon in need--being told to go help--the voice gets more frantic, the cat's fur rising. ailuros takes off into the high afternoon sun across the plain to where the cat guides her. they find an older snapper dragon, burrowed down into a crevasse too small for him, just out of reach of a burly shade beast that snorts as it harries him. the cat bound to her neck leaps forward with a shrill yowl, and without a moment's thought ailuros leaps after. |
