about.

cadere is an undead guardian, born in gem's rest and resurrected along the leyline that runs below the cairnstone rest. she has always been blessed--or cursed--with the ability to suck the life from the plants around her, and while she cannot stop it she can harness it. she left gem's rest not long after her undeath began, unable to take the eyes that judged her more so now than when they banned her from entering the farmers fields, or sneered at her when houseplants died. when she still lived in the shattered plain, she did not know how to tap into the excess life she absorbed from the plant life around her. when she died, crushed by falling rocks, and was reborn again, it was as if a pool inside her had been drained. she was hungry for the life of the plants around her.

in her tumbleweed pilgrimage away from home, she practiced her skill, no dragon to fear the judgement from. she learned to heal her own cuts and bruises by taking the life from the cactus and manzanita around her. she learns to cache it until she needs it. she cannot fix the way her poorly-set bones click, or the limp she carries over from her first life, but she can keep it from happening again.

she may even be able to reverse her own death forever, if she keeps a stock of energy within her as backup.

but first, she will try to test the other more reasonable limits of her gift. she searches for a new clan, one who will not recognize her undeath, and try her hand at healing others.

story.

magic in sorenieth has been shifting. the leylines pulse, inanimate objects take draconic shapes and speak in the common tongue, call themselves by the name of breeds well-known across the land. cadere is, in a way, one such anomaly.

she and her sister hatched in tandem, months after the eldest of the trio, and cadere did not speak a word for months. ailuros did all the talking for the both of them, and cadere was always on her heels, nodding or shaking her head in punctuation. cadere was noticeably smaller than her sisters, particularly so considering she was the only guardian in the clutch. while in behavior she was ailuros' shadow, in personality she was áine's. cadere had an unsettling presence about her, heightened by her silence, and her strange propensity to killing any plant around her.

the floral death was never on purpose, rather an inexplicable radial effect. an exact and opposite gift to áine's, who causes plants to grow around her. where the dragons of gems rest called áine's magic a gift, they said cadere's was the counterpart--death the price of life. if áine was blessed by the earthshaker, cadere was cursed by the gladekeeper, a punishment for the old earth god for infringing on her sphere of power. if áine was blessed by the gladekeeper, the earthshaker gave cadere the ability to undo it.

years passed and she still spoke very little, still gangly and staring. she and ailuros spent hours exploring the caverns below the town, sometimes under the watchful eye of their mother, zelena, but more often alone together. it was in one such exploration that the unthinkable happened. when climbing across a pile of rocks, and a misstep led them to crumble, crushing cadere beneath them. by the time ailuros had dragged their mother down to find them, nothing could be done. well, nothing traditional that is.

in the cairnstone rest, skeletal wyrms stalk the shadows. in gem's rest itself, there live two fossilizd wildclaws uncovered by the dragonhome preservation guild, who live and work as dragons. there are rumors of simulacrum dragons made of flesh in the alleys of the hellwell undercroft. nature eggs raised in melon fields growing over leylines hatch into living melon dragons. the dead don't always stay dead.

so zelena takes her daughter to the leyline, lays the twisted body along the path of magic far beneath the earth, conducting a ritual on instinct alone, guided by what she believed was the intention of the earthshaker himself, the steps of which she would never disclose. the plants within a mile of where cadere lay withered and died.

but she did not. cadere took a breath, her bones snapping nearly back into place. she returned home with a lopsided limp and surrounded by stares. if she had not been solitary before, she certainly would be now. zelena never explained herself to the dragons of gem's rest, and ailuros never admitted to anyone else what had happened to cadere.

but the alienation cadere felt could no longer be combated by the presence of ailuros. not long after áine left home without a word, cadere--ever the shadow--followed her example.
