"Yes, one should fear fire. But when the nights are cold, fire is the closest friend you will ever have."


Late at night, when the winter wind blows, travelers who fight the biting cold sometimes find themselves lost in their wandering minds. As weary eyes rest on the flickering flames of their campfires, a pup of flame dances about, always hopping and skipping just a little bit closer to frosted lashes. Those who drift off wake to ash dusting their forms, the only thing left unscathed in the small blaze that had staved off the cold.

This is the tale of the Barghest, Brandr.

They open newborn eyes to a world on fire. The flickering lights climb to the rooftop, and embers drop upon their nest of silken rags and torn-up clothes. The hatchlings squirm out of their eggshells and squeak when the flames reach too close, burning their soft scales and singing their manes. What once was a pitiful nursery becomes a tomb, as the building begins to crumble and collapse as the flames eat it whole.

But what fortune! One of the hatchlings spots a safe, cracked open, underneath the nearby bedframe. The four children dive for the safe, and squabble for space as they pack themselves into the safe. The metal heats up uncomfortably, like an oven, but the four hatchlings are smart and stay in the safe to wait out the fire.

A mother watches on, unaware of anything except her burning home, and howls a mournful cry to the sky for her children, lost to the blaze. By the time the four siblings crawl out of the ashes, their mother is long gone.
