He has a fixation on Nicodemus' pearl and loves to "borrow" it. He does not have any interest in any other Pearlcatcher's pearls. He is, naturally, not on good terms with Atoll. Or Nicodemus, for that matter, but it's not like their opinion about their own pearl matters to either of them. There is a divide between the clan gossips who pay attention to this particular drama on whether Arsene's thefts of Nicodemus' pearl is indication of affection and Arsene is attempting to gain their interest in typical Ridgeback manner, which is just backfiring spectacularly. This line of thought has spawned more than one argument between gossip circles. Those opposed point out Arsene's preexisting fixation on pearls in general; this is usually countered by pointing out the various other Pearlcatchers who continue to remain in possession of their pearls. All agree that, if true, this is not a healthy manner to interact with a Pearlcatcher you are not on familiar and friendly terms with regardless. He is the adoptive guardian of Arrhen or "Chirp", a Nocturne who took to him immediately upon joining the clan, since his large size and similar coloration made her feel more secure. He was initially not interested in cultivating any sort of bond with her, and was prepared to find her a nuisance, but that did not last very long and Arsene found himself reluctantly but swiftly growing fond and protective over her, eventually taking her under his wing (both literally and figuratively). The instant he found her mini-hoard of "pearls" that she was attempting to model after his, he was lost. She has taken up his pearl obsession. She doesn't quite discriminate between pearls and marbles or other roundish things, though, so her hoard is a mishmash of various round objects, mainly marbles and pebbles. Arsene takes advantage of this and liberates most of the pearls she gathers for his own hoard. She doesn't mind this, although her mimic nature means she ends up stealing her pearls back, leading to Arsene stealing them back again, and the cycle continues. Rather than get annoyed at constantly having to defend his precious pearls like he ordinarily would, Arsene enjoys their bouts of circular theft, since it is reminiscent of Ridgeback bonding behavior and he enjoys strengthening their relationship. He's sure that Chirp also enjoys his perceived mimicry of her behavior and considers them a bonding experience as well. He is constantly harassing Valto to go pearldiving, since he is unwilling to do it himself, not liking water. Valto does not often go pearldiving, as he doesn't have the time in his effort to keep up with the clan's seafood demand, but he gives in to Arsene's demands of first dibs on oyster and clam to appease him and get him to shut up. He is forbidden from going near the clan's Water temple without supervision, since pearls are used for decoration in the architecture and furnishings and a large aquarium contains mussels amongst other sea life. He likes visiting and drinking in the artistry of the place, though, even though being unable to take any with him is painful at times. He appreciates the Tidelord for making pearls possible and occasionally pays tribute in the rare instances he's allowed entrance to the temple (not any of his precious pearls, though). Some clan members find a Ridgeback affiliated with the Tidelord (by choice, even) to be inherently hilarious and/or baffling. |

Super original name for a RB, I know. I originally just wanted a Ridgeback to steal a PCs pearl constantly and it was gonna be just the PC's pearl he was interested in, but then, apparently, the character's affinity or pearls just got way out of hand...
"Pearl" is no longer a word.
Regarding Arsene stealing Nic's pearl as an indication of romantic interest, I honestly have no idea. At first I thought it would be a running joke that Arsene is crushing hard and doesn't know what to do with it and how to indicate it so he just does what Ridgebacks do, especially since stealing is a way to form a bond. But also thinking of just how important a PC's pearl is, and what it is to them, this could have really unhealthy and abusive implications and so I scrapped that. I'm unsure if I want to pursue this line of thought and figure out some way to make them okay with each other in the future. IDK. Still decide to mention it in lore as a possibility but through gossips eyes, so it's unreliable and unconfirmed, because not even I am sure...
