Nicknamed "Chirp", from one of her favorite things to imitate (and to eat): crickets. She enjoys trilling and chirping, particularly at night, much to the irritation of everyone in earshot. Chirping is her default state and often turns to it when bored or to comfort herself, and usually for no particular reason at all. She even unconsciously learned to regulate her chirping with the temperature, although she does not realize she does it, some clan members caught on and occasionally try to guess the exact temperature based on her song. She has a shy, nervous disposition and is always more comfortable hidden out of sight or at night (typical for her breed), or in the shade of Arsene's large wings or spikes. She is the adopted child of Arsene, a Ridgeback that the Nocturne took to immediately upon joining the clan, since his large size and similar coloration made her feel more secure. She can often be found on his snout or hiding under one of his spikes. She often wishes she also had his genes to match him more. Arsene was initially not interested in cultivating any sort of bond with her, he generally cares only for pearls, and was prepared to find her a nuisance. That did not last very long and Arsene found himself reluctantly but swiftly growing fond and protective over her, eventually taking her under his wing (both literally and figuratively). The instant he found her mini-hoard of "pearls" that she was attempting to model after his, he was lost. Arsene is very preoccupied with pearls, and steals as many as he can; she has taken up his pearl obsession. She doesn't quite discriminate between pearls and marbles or other roundish things, though, so her hoard is a mishmash of various rounded objects, mainly marbles and pebbles (occasionally a particularly spherical egg*, shortly followed by irate expecting parents). Arsene takes advantage of her pearl collecting and often liberates most of the pearls she gathers for his own hoard. She doesn't mind this, although her mimic nature means she ends up stealing her pearls back, leading to Arsene stealing them back again... Rather than get annoyed at constantly having to defend his precious pearls like he ordinarily would, Arsene enjoys their bouts of circular theft, since it is reminiscent of Ridgeback bonding behavior and he enjoys strengthening their relationship. He's believes that Chirp also enjoys his perceived mimicry of her behavior and considers them a bonding experience as well. It doesn't occur to her consciously as it does him, but he is correct in thinking that it does end up making them closer from her perspective, too. *Egg stealing is strictly forbidden in the clan, a necessary precaution due to possessing so many Wildclaw and Ridgeback members. Unlike any other breeds that may be caught stealing, she is generally unpunished but for a scolding, since the clan leaders understand that her thefts are mainly driven by misunderstanding rather than an actual desire to steal the egg itself, and the eggs are always recovered before any harm is done. (Most of the clan also just plain feels bad for yelling at her, and try to avoid upsetting her as much as possible. She tends to trigger protective instincts in almost anyone.) |
