Biography

mub489R.png

I sat on major love dragon for a month without plans and ended up getting so salty about things that I had to make a custom skin.

muah you're worth it.

wowie zowie this is just turning into a lore dump !! beware !! messy below !!
italics = me rambling on discord and crying

he's ICly more akin to an oviraptor in terms of build / stance and has two wings along with four feathered limbs for gliding.

HE IS AN ABSOLUTE GOBLIN. A GREMLIN. A BEAN. Think of that one person who's deadpan on proving to you that something's silt rather than a shale and you're like 'oh yeah okay that's fine' and they're like 'no no you don't understand it, you understand the difference when you rub it on your TEETH.' and then you're like 'uh that sounds miserable why would you do that to yourself' and they just stand there like you're the dumbest person on this freakin planet and go 'because that's how you tell??' and you have to watch them stick this chunk of rock into their mouth and how they grimace in pain as that lovely piece of shale rattles against their nerves and they just look at it and go 'ah eyup that's sure shale right there' and carry on with life like nothing happened.

That's Quail.

He would like to sit and barter with you over the smallest of nuggets or tokens. He'd like to shove gemstones and pieces of raw metal into his mouth to inspect them and pop 'em out to give them a peek. His tusks are plated with metal -- he says it's to 'help figure out hardness!' of things but it's moreso because he's a vain piece of heck and would like to preen whenever possible.

He's screechy, quick to react but just as quick to forgive. When he gets excited he stomps around like an emu.

"he's that one merchant you find around goblin cities that knows a little bit of common and is like YES. MUSHROOM? BUY? IS GOOD. YES. EAT? UH. NO. MAYBE? NO WAIT YES. NO WAIT NO. POISON? Nnnnnnn....oooo? NO. WAIT. and it's like.... you don't trust them a single bit but you can tell they're putting their all into it and there's something stupidly cute about it."

He calls himself a merchant, peddling gemstones, unopened geodes, and metals. But.... he doesn't quite seem to know that much about most things. He has a general knowledge of everything related to his trade, he can spout off random facts on how to identify something or the value of whatever else, but it's always slightly off somehow. He'll often give you a trade that favours you somehow, either not wholly aware of the value of what he has or overvaluing something that you have-- but only for the things you don't expect. Any trade that involves contaminated specimens, either elementally-corrupted or pieces with strange inclusions or discolourations will immediately grab his attention, causing him to Lose His Cool and start to babble about literally the first thing that bursts into his mind, trilling and chirping in sections in some weird warbly wibbles. This obvious interest often leads to him being ripped off, but he doesn't ever seem to mind in the slightest.

Where does he get all of his gold from though? He never seems to run out or have issues with adding new pieces to his collection. His wares always replenish themselves within a day at most: cut stones, decorative pieces, ancient stoneware perfectly intact, things hard to carry and hard to quickly source, and yet.... there they are.

Other pearlcatchers seem to be cautious around him. Most outside of the lair tend to try to avoid him completely. Most don't want to discuss him whatsoever. Pearlcatcher travelers will struggle to see the dragon beyond his apparel for one massive reason: the multiple shades of obvious pearlcatcher pearl strung through his entire garb. Earrings with rounded pearlshard in a glimmer jade, jagged crystal-like spires of youngpearl through delicate gold filigree across his body. Thin woven strands of pearl-powdered silk weave through his silks, the same -- or similar? pearl powder staining his snout and claws with a pearlescent sheen. He's covered in pearl gore, too many pearls for them to be loved ones, too many varieties from them to all be from the same place.

To those unaware: he's a glittery, happy merchant eager to trade with whoever possible. To those who know the truth in his glittering appearance: he's a merchant of death, somehow, he definitely dabbles with something terrible.

QUILL IS LITERALLY JUST

Cursed little Hiccup ™️ in some pact stuff between the oasis and main lair, so he's another elemental but kinda ?? untied from the elements ?? no more innate magic in that sense and his mind has kinda snapped from it. A lot of his linguistics down the drain and his sanity kinda 50/50 in a chaotic good way. Ish. But a big part of him is his obsession with pearlcatchers because pearls in the oasis grounds were stupidly rare and now you're saying there's a whole ???? race ??????? that just carries them ???????????? and they're even MORE IMPORTANT ??????

He loves them, he likes to hold them and crush them and feel the layers crack apart like desiccated clay when pressed just the right way with your claws or teeth, how it turns into a fine powder under stone and metal when ground up, how many different layers of pearl there are deeper into the pearl like a hidden geode -- and of course, what people are willing to trade for their pearls. Or other people's pearls.

So! Merchant! yes yes. He has the goods that you'd like, that trinket you've been pining for for years, that ancient tome that has been only talked about in hushed whispers in the back of old archives, and oh what? he doesn't understand what you're talking about? he won't take gold?

Oh he wants your necklace. The last remains of your lost hatchling, the semi-crescent of pearl worn from constant rubbing.

No you can't trade that.

He tilts his head and points to your own pearl.

Final offer.

he usually won't care if people swipe small things from him, but if he knows it's valuable enough to extort something nice off of someone / if he specifically summoned the item to torment someone it's difficult to scam him. If he's in a good mood though and you have good pieces of corrupted / contaminated gemstone then he'll go for that instead.

His priority is always going to be gem and metal of value, pearls are bonus. If you have neither of the first two, the latter is going to be what he pushes for. As long as you're prepared and have good wares / aren't causing issues around the den, you'll get a good deal.

he has grim interests but he's literally a goblin brained walnut that has his emotions on his sleeve. He gets excited and does emu dances around or bobs his head a whole bunch like !!!!!!!! OH BOY OH BOY

also he eats the corrupted stuff :v anything with corrupted flight / elemental magic in it he adores for ages and then gobbles up like the best treat in the world. It helps keep him going since he's unbound from the oasis itself.
