—Loosely based off of an OC.—

“Nix! There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
The Skydancer raises his head, regarding the Nocturne racing towards him. He nods his regard.
“Why’d you leave? There’s a lot going on. And they told us not to go toward that place.”
Nix’s feathers ruffle, and he turns towards the direction he was previously headed. There’s a strange feeling in the air. It seems his companion does not share the same feeling.
“Oh- Are you going somewhere? Can I follow? It’s not a good idea to be out on your own, anyway.” The Nocturne curls his tail around his talons. “I can’t stop you from going, but at least let me come.”
The obsidian Skydancer tilts his head thoughtfully. He nods after a moment of deliberation. Even though he’s the only one with the ominous feeling about this place they found, it’s easier to face it with a friend.
As they wander through the thickening forest, the feeling gets stronger. Nix has the feeling he’s going in the right direction; even his companion’s one-sided conversation doesn’t distract him from it anymore.
“Woah, watch your step. There’s the sinkhole ahead.”
Nix is brought from his thoughts by his companion’s warning. The gaping abyss in the ground is endless at a glance. When he approaches it, he can see a sort of path spiraling down into the void. The feeling in the air intensifies. He can feel it in his bones.
“Woah. That’s… a long way down. Are you thinking of going in?”
Nix doesn’t respond. He makes his way toward the sloping path. The Nocturne jogs to catch up to him.
The air is thick with almost a… sacred feeling. Like he shouldn’t be here, but it’s inviting him in. Even his friend keeps his voice down. He can vaguely make out carvings and murals lining the walls, more prominent the deeper they go. The light fades. He can still see, but from what, he’s unsure.
Nix’s ears perk. A whisper in his ear, like a voice carried in the wind. He glances around, but the only thing he sees is the Nocturne, staring up at the murals in awe.
He chalks it up to his imagination and keeps moving. They always call him a seer.
“You’re new here.”
He definitely heard that. The Skydancer pauses, glances around, but gets the same results as last time. He ruffles his wings in unease. But he’s still drawn to the bottom of this chasm, so he continues.
The whispers become more prominent. He can’t make anything out beyond the occasional word. He can’t quite pinpoint the source, either, but the urge to descend is fading. He stops in his tracks, orchid eyes narrowing.
“Got cold feet?” His companion asks, turning around. “I’m sure it’s fine. Come on, I think there’s something down there.”
Nix shakes his head. He doesn’t want to find out what’s down there.
“Come on, friend! I’ll go first, if you want.”
He is not your friend. The obsidian Skydancer blinks, as the realization dawns on him. He doesn’t even know this dragon’s name. He takes a step back.
“Nothing here bites. Come on. Don’t you want a voice, Nix?”
The voice comes from behind him. There’s nothing there. He snaps his head around to keep an eye on the stranger, but he’s gone.
Something- he doesn’t know if it’s invisible, or magic, or some other force- forces him off the ledge to his right. The falling dragon opens his mouth to vocalize his shock, but his silence never breaks.

It kept its word. It gave them a voice. But they remain silent.
They fear that if they ever use it, it’ll come and collect the payment for their voice, and it’ll drag them back into the abyss for good.
The smell of singed feathers and ash clings to them. Sometimes, smoke wreathes around their body. No one knows why, not even Nix themself.
They don’t trust anyone. Not even if they’ve known them for some time. If it can convince them something that doesn’t even exist is their friend, it can definitely do so with a real dragon.
Requiem has visions about them, but they unsettle her enough that she keeps them to herself.
