"Greed does not rest until it is satisfied, and greed is never satisfied."

Just as Avarice finds it's way into the hearts of dragons that already have all they need, it also taints the hearts of Dragons who have nothing. Poor destitute souls wandering the flights in search of a place they can call home.

Ever since Midas could remember, she'd been on her own. She had been born in the light flight, on the bottom rung of a clan that functioned on Hierarchy. Despite her golden coat and her wings that shone brilliantly in the sun, she was mistreated by the others in her clan and made to bow before the leaders of the clan. Even as a hatchling, she never understood what separated them from her. There was never any reason given as to why they were on top and she was on bottom. She was only told that it was a matter of who had the biggest hoard.

It didn't take long for Midas, who was now a young fledgling, to be sick of it all. She tried to make an effort to stand up to the Clan leaders and advocate for better treatment of her family and those like them. She had an arguement with the leaders and ended up swiping one of them across the eye. She was exiled from the clan.

She spent the next several years wandering the flights.

When she was an adult, she joined up with a group of dragons investigating a cave that was deep in the Earth Kingdom. She had learned to be a capable fighter by then, but it alone wasn't enough to fill her belly, she could barely scrape by, even trying the best she could at hunting. Odd jobs were her best bet to get some money for food.

The cave led into a tomb. There were traps everywhere. Only her and the leader of the Expedition made it to the treasure room. Lifelike statues of dragons surrounded the sarcophagus in the middle of the room. The floor was covered in treasure. Unable to believe how much there was, Midas began to pocket as much as she could. There was a chest that called to her. It was square, with a flat lid resting on top. She scooted the lid halfway off and peered inside.

A voice spoke to her.

"Psst, what's your greatest desire? I'll give you riches beyond your wildest dreams, as a favor for letting me out."

Midas couldn't see what was in the box, but she was taken in by the promise of wealth. For far too long, she'd lived with nothing to her name. She decided it was time that she did something about it.

"Gold." She responded, "I want gold."

"You want gold? Then just stick your hands in the chest. I'll give you all the gold you could ever want."

She did as asked, cupping her hands so that she could hold it all, but was surprised when she didn't feel anything change.

She yanked her hands out of the chest, clearly irritated.

"Hey! What's the matter? I thought you were going to make me rich."

"Look at your claws" The voice responded.

She did as she was asked, and was surprised to see that her previously black claws had turned golden.

"I don't understa-" She started as she looked back at the chest, only to find that the creature was gone.

She didn't understand, not until she started to walk. The stones within a certain radius of her front and back claws turned to solid gold, extending out in a circle from the clawtip. The dragon that was with her was astonished at the discovery.

She and the researcher managed to make it out alive, and for a time she was happy with this new ability, and she thought it a gift. It brought many riches to her and with those riches, she tried to start her own clan.

She settled down with another dragon and had eggs with him, but when she accidentally touched the egg with a clawtip, it turned to solid gold, the child inside presumably lost to her.

It was then that she realized she couldn't hold her own egg, nor any child that she produced. She was horrified at the relvelation, and when her love tried to calm her down, he bumped one of her clawtips and the curse took effect, turning him into a solid gold statue. She realized that all the lifelike statues in the tomb weren't created by some artisan, they were real dragons that were affected by the curse, doomed to spend eternity as a statue.

She fled her nest in sheer panic, leaving her other still alive egg in the process. She hated to doom it to a life on it's own, but it was better than being turned into a gold statue. She hoped the hatchling that came from it would at least find a good home. Still, she yearned to be a mother.

Next market she came to, she purchased a set of plain gauntlets that turned to gold when she touched them. She slipped them over her front and back clawtips, deciding that she would never use her gift again.

She wandered for a long time before coming to the Clan of Diversity. She'd heard it was a haven for the downtrodden, or for those that felt like they just didn't fit in. She figured it was worth a shot, and that if she couldn't find a place in such a clan of misfits, than she truly didn't have a place in the world.

She was surprised at the warm welcome she got, even when she told them about her little curse. Azurefrost, the clan's Tundra leader, shrugged it off and pointed to her gauntlets with a clawtip. He told her that as long as she was taking preventative measures, she was welcome in the clan.

She was quick to become friends with the Clan's most misfit of Dragons. Rowan; a Battle Born Mirror who didn't want to fight, Salem; A survivor just starting to learn how to live, and Strife; A battle hardened Veteran who's fluent in silence.

The one that stood out among them all, was an old Dragon named Viridian. He was one of the co-founders of the clan, a grumpy but kind Guardian that had a love for plants and nature. One night, soon after she joined the clan, the two of them met on a hill that overlooked the clan's lair. Viridian asked what her story was, and she told him. That night, he said something that she'd never forget.

7831893p.png "Gold is overrated. Sure, we need a sizable hoard to survive but we scrape together what we can with our own claws, It's better if it's earned that way.

"Gold isn't what's important to me." Viridian gestured down the hill to the clan that he swore to protect, "They mean the world to me and many of them I am happy with calling family. I watched Tyrian grow up here. I met Shiva here and he became one of my closest friends. I was there when Styx brought him into the Clan, half dead from a monster attack. I was there when Batai brought his future husband Cordenth here. I saw this Clan rise from the ground up.

"The bonds between dragons are what is most important, and I am happy that so many in this can decided to give this old oak a chance. That's why, if it ever came down to it, I would protect them with my life, not just because they are my charge, but because they deserve to live a life free of strife and turmoil."

What he said had opened her eyes. She made an effort to connect with others in the clan, to learn about their stories, and she fell in love with Viridian and his simple life tending to the plants, waiting for a day when something should threaten the peace of the clan.

They had a nest and their first child. With the gauntlets on, Midas held her child without worry of the curse getting to him. They named him Evander.

Finally, Midas was a mother.
