As a young dragon, Caligo had no stars in his skin. He was a simple looking drake, except for the way his eyes stood out from his dark scales. Caligo traveled the world with a rag-tag group of merchants, as his parents had abandoned him long ago. It wasn't easy to keep up, but he knew it was necessary to survive.
Caligo's clan passed through the Starfall Isles for business, arriving just as the sun set. As the crew set up in the markets, the young dragon decided to explore.
His heart was immediately captured by the sky. In all of Sornieth, he had never seen anything quite like it! The stars seemed to shine extra bright, and with all of the magic hanging in the air, there seemed to be more than ever. He wandered into an open field and flopped onto his back, feeling the vastness of the all wash over him. Nocturne Star
Caligo couldn't shake the feeling, even after hours of stargazing. It felt like the stars held stories, spirits, that he was just seconds away from deciphering. Almost like... they were speaking to him? Yes, if that longing in his bones was any indication... They had something to tell him!
Caligo, forgetting about his clan, wandered further into the wilderness. He followed the low hum of the stars, even as they led him deeper and deeper into the darkness. Even when the sky was obscured, he could feel it, as if it had become a part of him.
And it had.
After what could have been minutes or hours, Caligo snapped out of his trance. He found himself on a strange island, in front of an unnaturally still pond. In the reflection, he saw his new markings- swirling, twisting, scintillating stars. He could hear their message clearly now, as they told him stories of mages and alchemists before him. Behind him, the pond reflected the night sky, even as the sun began to rise in the east. Never, in any of his travels, had Caligo felt such a profound sense of belonging. Distantly, he knew he should get back to his clan, but he found himself unable to make himself do it. The group would move on without him- they probably wouldn't even realize he was gone for days! But this, in all its glory, could only ever be his.
His heart won out. Caligo decided there to leave the merchants behind, and dedicate what he could to studying the spirit of the sky. As a result, his magic took on some odd qualities. Despite its obvious Wind alignment, it almost seemed to form the "shapes" of Arcane magic. Nobody in the world casts quite like him, to this day.
