Named after the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars, a set of texts detailing stars within 25 parsecs (~81 lightyears) of our sun.
More specifically a reference to Gliese 581, a red dwarf ~20 lightyears from Earth located in the constellation Libra. Once thought to have a habitable planet within its orbit, now unfortunately disproven.
