................................................... |
The arrival of the Aether breed was a notable event in the Rubellite Delta. The Astrolab came down only a few miles south of the border outpost, sending the Delta into a flurry of activity as dragons from all nearby clans rushed to help the Aethers evacuate the crash site, and, later, to adjust to planetside life. The Starry Night Inn, for their part, found themselves the busiest they'd been in decades, housing and feeding hundreds of newly-homeless Aethers as well as researchers, envoys from the Observatory, and curious dragons come to welcome the new breed. Temporary employees were pulled from the nearby clans, decades-old bedding was pulled from storage, and the ballroom was transformed into a makeshift hatchery. Even the Arcanist himself paused his studies for a time to oversee the welcoming of his eldest children back to Sornieth. Reuniting Aether clans and families was a priority in the early weeks after the crash, and it went smoothly for the most part. Even with all the best efforts of Arcane's finest organizers, though, there were a few eggs that nobody could track down a family for. Starlight's was one of these. It was first noticed by Meadowsweet, the ballroom's resident ghost. Starlight's egg had been pulled out of the sinking Astrolab with the rest of them, but in the chaos of creating an emergency hatchery, it was shuffled off to a corner and forgotten. It wasn't until Lissy noticed Meadow's increasing agitation a few days later that they discovered the egg, unmarked and unnoticed by the living. The egg was hurriedly transferred a nest with other eggs whose parents weren't present. Slowly, all the eggs whose families could be located were returned to them. Most were marked with names of parents or at least clans, and as Aethers who had fled to the mainland reunited with those who had taken refuge in the Isles, it wasn't hard to track down most of the eggs' homes. Some, vaguely-marked or with parents who had fled the immediate area, took longer. A few were unmarked entirely, but other Aether families volunteered to add an egg or two to their clutches. The number of eggs in the hatchery steadily decreased as clans relocated their eggs to self-maintained hatcheries in their clusters of rooms or found places to stay outside the Inn. Eventually, Bramble deemed that it would be better to move the few remaining eggs to a smaller room and give Meadowsweet her ballroom back. Slowly, those last few eggs found homes too. Except one, and it was getting close to hatching. It was Cheshire who proposed that the Inn staff adopt it. An egg could go without a permanent family as long as it was tended to, he reasoned, but a hatchling would need stability, and the Inn staff had already been taking care of it for months, at that point. If its parents were still alive they clearly weren't looking very hard for it, and none of the other Aethers seemed eager to take it in. It took a few days of consideration, but by the time it hatched, the rest of the core staff had come around to the idea. |
