Umbriel was launched from The Astrolab alone, being the last egg from his family before the crash began. Unfortunately for him, that left him vulnerable to many dangers upon landing back on Sornieth, crashing right into a chamber holding a Shade-infested beast. The beast perished and the Gaolers guarding the chamber tried to remove the egg from the area as quick as possible, but it was too late. The Shade had touched the egg the minute it entered the chamber.
When he hatched, he seemed to be relatively healthy, no obvious signs of Shade, except for his eyes. The Shade couldn't fully corrupt Umbriel, but it left him blind and with damaged vocal chords. The Goalers who raised him were able to work around it, teaching him how to use his other senses to get around, and while he has spells of muteness, he can sometimes speak short, strained sentences, but prefers to only speak when absolutely necessary.
