"Phlox, there's someone you ought to meet." Smiled Maelle as she opened the door to the nursery.
Phlox tentatively peered inside, he wasn't fond of surprises. As the door creaked open, a voice piped out and he leapt back in surprise.

"I lived in a big shiny dome with hundreds and hundreds of plant specimens!!"
A little brown dragon was skipping, jumping and rollicking around the room as she yelled at the top of her lungs.

Phlox shrunk behind Maelle who wrapped her tail around him.
"Really? Why don't you tell us more!" Maelle said, grunting with effort as she tried to nudge Phlox out from his hiding spot. He had hunkered down and didn't plan on talking to this rambunctious girl.

"Hello!! Yes, yes, yes. It was a botany laboratory, my mama is studying the effects of low gravity on Angiosperm seed dispersal! And my dad engineers the hydroponic system! And sometimes he let me adjust the humidity and and and--"

The little aether flopped down in the middle of the nursery, clearly out of breath but desperate to tell us more. She had been checked for injuries and she was unharmed, aside from a few tears in her delicate vestigial wings. They trilled and buzzed with excitement as she spoke.

Phlox peered over Maelle's enormous tail with suspicion. He tried to think hard about the words the little aether was chittering on about. He didn't remember any botany lab... even if he knew a lot about botany.

"Phlox likes flowers, don't you Phlox?"
Phlox almost jumped as he was disturbed from his observations. He flattened down and tried to hide again before Maelle gently took him by the scruff with her teeth and plopped him in front of the new Aether pup. She had wide, warm eyes and a big fluffy ruff jst like him. She was brown and green and dusty blue just like leaves and bark and fungi. Phlox leaned in to inspect her.

"He's not usually this shy, are you Phlox?" Maelle chuckled.
Marmaroth, the matron of the nursery, snorted as she folded some freshly washed linen, "He's being challenged for the spot of most talkative nuissance..."
"She's going to liven up the place, it seems."
"Yes, with that active imagination of hers, they're going to make quite the pair..." Marmaroth rolled her eyes, though Maelle could tell she didn't mean it.

"Its okay. Maybe he's just listening. I like listening too." She wagged her long swishy tail, the bulb at the end covered with its own fluttery bits, "Trees are good listeners. They have a lot of stories and I like to listen and take notes. Do you want to hear any tree stories?"

Phlox didn't know what else to do so he nodded and sat down as she began to talk. And talk. And talk. And talk... Phlox found himself curling up besides her as she told her stories, Maelle eventually left to take care of training and Marmaroth went away to usher the older hatchlings to classes.

"And then-- the Juniperus Osteosperma told me about how roots can be ticklish but the older you get the less you feel your roots because you have so many roots and that's when my dad--"

The girl cut herself short and yawned. She had exhausted herself from talking. Phlox was almost half asleep himself.

"Where is your dad now?" He asked softly.
The hatchling looked back as she heard his voice for the first time, "I don't... know... I lost him in the big crash. I just remember all the sirens and flashing lights. Then -- boooooom! Then I woke up in a boat on the way to the Light Territory. The nice dragons said they were taking me to a nice clan with nice dragons. And now I'm here. I'm sure him and mama will be here soon."

Phlox hummed in agreement. They'd arrive soon and he would get to ask all the questions he needed. And maybe she'd stop talking in the mean time.

Moons passed over head. The Jubilee came and went. Pyrrhus spent every day pressing her snout to the nursery window or bothering the lookouts for news. But there was no news. No aethers came to claim their hatchling who made up stories about talking trees and singing fungi. Pyhrrus even snuck into Lassuarium's office to give her 'HATCHLING FOUND' posters to give out at the coming festivals. One day, she had taken Phlox to Lanternlea port to pin them to every wall and stall and banner. Much to the merchants annoyance. Still nothing.

Summer was turning to Autumn. And Pyrrhus took longer and longer walks out into the woods at dusk. Phlox found he couldn't sleep and would join her where she would listen to what the trees had to say. What minerals and nutrients they had taken in that day, how the oxygen tasted at night and how itchy the leaves on their twigs felt as they curled and dried out ready to fall.

"I never listened to a real forest before I came here." Pyrrhus sighed, "They all chatter at once, in a chorus together. I can hear the xylem draw the water up from the roots in harmony, like flutes and whistles. I guess I would have never heard it if our vessel hadn't fallen..."

"I guess that's the bright side of things." He said, "Do you think your parents will come to find you soon?"
Pyrrhus turned to him with a sad smile, keeping a brave face, "No. I gave up weeks ago."
"Then... why keep putting the posters up? And looking out the window?"
"Because if I stop looking... they would be dissapointed in me." She said, trying to keep her voice from shaking, "My dada told me to never give up. And my mama told me to always keep my chin up. And... I don't want them to think I am fine without them. I'm not... I miss them so much."

Pyrrhus began to sob and flung herself around him. Phlox patted her and tucked his tail around her. He felt an ache in his chest, like he was supposed to be sad for something as well. Something he couldn't even name or remember. Maybe he was just sad that he couldn't remember in the first place. He closed his eyes and leaned into their hug.

"They're gone. I know they're gone." She weeped, "I just want to go home but home is gone. And I'm here and I'm happy with you and the clan and ... it feels like its the wrong kind of happy. Like I've left behind a happy I'll never know."
"Wouldn't your mama and dada want you to have some kind of happy? Even if its not the exact right kind of happy?"
"Yeah... that's the hard part. I just have to keep going without them."

They huddled in silence together for quite sometime. The evening chorus began and the stars began to peek out from the night. They had to return home soon or get an earful from Marmaroth. Pyrrhus sat up and began to walk slowly back down the trodden path to the clan.

"Maybe I'm supposed to be here. Or not. But... I'm glad I'm here with these trees and the clan and the light territory and... you."
Phlox bumped her with his cheek affectionately, "Me too."
