Gofodwr and Galaeth had no idea where they had come from. Agony, their caretaker, had described the mysterious pod he had found them in, how its colorful lights pierced through the fog and led him to the contraption. Far and away the strangest way he’d ever found a hatchling, he always said, let alone two of them. They must have come from the stars, somewhere far away.

They watched the stars together, late at night on the beach, and discussed what they thought it must be like. Were there more dragons like them? Whole clans of them? What were they like? What kinds of adventures did they have?

Someday, they decided, they would have their own adventures. Maybe they’d build a contraption like the pod they were found in and fly off to the stars. Maybe there they’d learn something about their families. Maybe their families were waiting for them now.

They weren’t sure what to think when they found the rusty box. Pried open, it held a roughly scratched message–not on paper, but on the bottom of the box itself.

The ships are falling. We can’t go back.
Be safe, little ones. We love you.

As hard as it was to know that there was no home for them to return to, they clung to the message. Especially the word we.

There were others to find. They would find them, and they would build their home. Their family.

A whole galaxy of them.
