the group of travelling companions - age chart

minako,

today the sickness has not been as bad. as you know, i took a break from travelling south, so i'm writing this on a stone balcony - one of the kind you always wanted - next to a steaming pot of coffee. the morning sunlight comes down into the ravine in slants of golden light; the sky beyond is blue. i've never been as good at writing as you were. you'd probably describe it better.

small villages further south are definitely something. sometimes, when i cough too loud while walking through the streets, they make signs of warding, like i'm cursed. this is a place rooted in tradition, i guess. it's a shame i'm not cursed, since there are plenty of self-proclaimed curse breakers around these parts. no, just ill. don't need lucky necklaces or pouches of cheap crystals.

i'm not far south enough for there to be many travellers yet. there are a few smug red-eyed traders, the tiny minority willing to go far north into the lower regions to scam unwitting villagers. they aren't much help, and none of them trade in the starfall isles. i have to keep going south.

well, my coffee is getting cold. the scents of the market street down below are drifting up and making me hungry. there's a little less dust than there was further north, so i'm not coughing as much. please don't worry about me.

yours,
loughran

minako,

there are many crystals in this area, though not like those where we once lived. no vibrant purples or blues, just a sort of amber-bronze colour, fading into grey when not in the sunlight. they're as big as walls. i'm near the border with the scarred wasteland now, and these bustling towns are full of archaeologists from light, and tourists from wind. i met a mirror from the starfall isles, but he's heading east to research on the earth-shadow-nature border. i didn't get to talk to him for long, but he reminded me of you.

with the return of the crystals comes, unfortunately, the return of the dust. ugh... it's getting worse. i feel weak and dizzy from all my coughing. worryingly, my pearl is getting darker and darker. i think i'm dying. i really do hope i can make it to the starfall isles before my body gives out, minako. if i have to breathe in this dust any longer, i might not.

right now, i'm not letting myself stop and rest. i need to find someone who is travelling west. i need to keep moving. there's no time to stop. if i stop moving, i might never move again, you know? ugh. i'm trying. some nights i'll doze for a while in a tavern, but most of the time i'll just be walking. on those nights, i look up at the stars and wish you were here.

wish me luck, please,
loughran

minako,

i found someone.

it's a group of three dragons. there's pluto, a rather small and indomitably cheerful veilspun; celastri, a quiet and mildly asocial imperial; and leylah, a... rude? and pretty blunt nocturne. they're a strange bunch for sure, and they're not who i'd ideally be travelling with (especially not with leylah), but it's better than nothing. pluto's nice enough, and celastri doesn't seem to like leylah any more than i do.

agh, i'm being quite negative, aren't i? sorry. you always taught me otherwise. it's just... difficult. leylah makes herself hard to like, what with her totally unprecedented hatred of me.

my sickness is... okay. it's plateaued. there haven't been many changes. i'm still coughing so hard i can barely breathe, but the air is different here. dust has been replaced with smog from the wasteland down south, and while it still isn't the best for my lungs, it's definitely different. the sky is hazy here, but even when i can't see the stars, i think of you.

your friend
loughran

minako,

another dragon has joined our group. her name is nyarlathotep. she's a gaoler. she's really big, bigger than you, haha! if only the two of you could meet - she's kind, like you were. she gets along well with everyone, even leylah, which i thought was only possible for pluto. ah, i guess not, haha.

she's also a warrior. from what i can gather, she's an actual overseer, which i must admit had me awed until i realised she's just a normal dragon. maybe the tales we heard from our gaoler friends of godly overseers with magic almost as powerful as the eleven weren't so true after all. (heh, remember those visual novels we all used to read as kids? what was it? "ice-born: saviours of the universe", or something. those awful-quality scribbles of that gaoler team fighting huge monsters. i'm still not convinced that it wasn't made by our friend's cousin, that guy who kept making those odd comics. remember yinqen? haha) nyarlathotep is younger than me, but so much better at fighting than any of us. i feel... a lot safer.

we've been in the scarred wasteland for a while now. i'm still not over the ground. it's so... spongy. ugh. it feels like walking on flesh. hey, what can you expect from the domain of the plaguebringer, right? we're skirting the desert, so i'm avoiding the worst of the dust. hmm... it's weird. some days i feel almost... better? this is a terminal illness, after all. i shouldn't be feeling like this.

loughran

oh, minako. if you were here, i'm sure you'd figure out why everything's going on. you'd make everything better. i miss you every day, y'know. since you left. that's a promise i made.

heh, but if you were listening from your grave when i was sitting there, you'd know that already. i said it to the stars; that's why, when i look up, i see you. it's not lost on me that i'm writing letters to nobody right now, and i never send them anywhere. ha. oh well, right? i hope that wherever you are, you still remember all the fun times we had when we were hatchlings. that's most of what i'm still holding onto nowadays.
