Biography

Subspecies: Gazers

Gazers are a subspecies of dragon specific to Delphyne's garden. It is said that these statuesque dragons have a gift of prophecy similar to waveseers, but their visions come to them after years of directly staring into the sun. The process of this leaves them said motionless for lengths of time so great that their scales turn to stone and the wildlife around them takes root on their hide. Serpents especially seem to be attracted to Gazers, and it is rumoured that the only way these dragons communicate is through the mouths of their serpentine companions.

Classical

Ideal classical Gazers should have a primary/secondary pairing which results in a similar hue/saturation across the body and wings. XXYs always classify. These individuals have stared into the sun for decades, and are near completely motionless and silent during the day. At night they occasionally take wing, moving to different vantage points and scrawling strange notes which are near-indescipherable to others not of their kind.

Modern

Most modern Gazers are less weathered than classical Gazers and have brighter, more sunkissed scales. They are less powerful than classical Gazers, having been looking into the sun for less time, but they're also more communicative than their older clanmates and so they are more likely to share information that's of use to anyone but their own kind.

Ancient Gazers have worked at their visions for so long that they have ceased moving entirely, even late at night long after after sunset. Dirt has accumulated on their scales over many years of service, and outside of magical means they are completely unable to communicate with the world outside themselves. Entire lineages of snakes have lived their years on ancients' hides; their hissed prophecies the only sign that the host is still alive.

Variants

All three subspecies from time to time develop unusual characteristics, usually signifying either weakness or unusual talent in the individual.

Goldenrod-Metal, Beige-Auburn, Gloom-Eldritch veined

Some are unequipped to handle the knowledge visions bestow upon them and develop cracks in their scales originating from the area around the eye; gaining these cracks is painful and often forces the Gazer into retirement. However, it isn't unheard of for them to continue in their study and gain unique insight from the injury - some even emit light from the cracks, signifying great potential. Those whose cracks are completely dark, however, are disgraced and lose their oracular abilities; some with entirely dark cracks in their scales are cursed with horrifying visions which haunt them for the rest of their days.

Any Opal

Gazers whose hide separates and shines with an opalescent gleam are limited in the scope of their visions, but see far more deeply and clearly than any other Gazer. The colour of their blemishes seems to correspond roughly to the kinds of vision they're given, but the nature of this connection is thus far unstudied.

On some gazers, a strange lichen takes hold upon their scales and obscures their visions, twisting them into something strange and abstract in comparison to their peers. This seems to happen most frequently deepest in the garden where the ivy is thickest and the air is damp and cool.
