Biography
GALANDE king of the kraksang |
|
Galande's clan of origin, the Yokkud, are firm believers that every time a dragon lost a battle, they honoured their victor by plucking one of the long spines from their neck or tail and offering it to them. |

THE OBSIDIAN BANESCALE Galande's arrogant and obnoxious attitude was never welcome in his previous clan - the Yokkud. While they are known for being powerful fighters, they are also firm believers in honour; something that the obsidian Banescale lacked massively. When the fire that swept through the Warped Wilds almost wiped out the Kraksang, the Yokkud were hesitant to offer help, knowing that the two clans hadn't always been on good terms with each other. Eventually a decision was made that Alpkraka, the next leader of the Kraksang, could choose any of the Yokkud's dragons as a mate to serve as a symbol of their conjoinment and desired peace. Alpkraka wasn't entirely happy with this negotiation, but couldn't help feeling immediately drawn to the Banescale; his entire demeanour came across as feisty and somewhat rebellious (which, she'd later learn were just his overwhelming arrogance). Being quite mischievous herself, Alpkraka thought he'd be the closest match she'd find within the Yokkud clan. Galande wasn't entirely pleased with having to leave the Yokkud. The two clans' previous bad blood had created many stories that were told among the elders. As a whelpling, the Banescale heard tales of their connections with the crows and ravens, how they could control the dark birds and pluck their enemies to pieces with their sharp beaks. Even though he never truly believed those stories, and marked it down as incredible superstition, Galande was always a little afraid of the Kraksang, even if he refused to admit it. When he was told he'd be joining their clan, and taking their soon-to-be leader as his mate, it made his stomach turn. The clan was, however, nowhere near as awful as he'd previously assumed. While the connections to the corvids was definitely true, Galande was soon assured that they couldn't tear dragons to shreds with them. Even his arrogant mind knew when it was incorrect; and the Banescale tried to engage with their beliefs, no longer viewing them as superstition but rather as something to admire. |

THE WHITE FEATHER After Galande and Alpkraka had been together for over a year, they decided it was time to start a family of their own; after a harsh winter that left the clan feeling morose, it would not only give them a reason to find happiness again but also give the leaders a true heir to their leadership. Alas, it was easier said than done; for years they tried and nothing came of it, only eggs that never hatched. As Faes' lifespans aren't as long as other dragons, Alpkraka knew she probably only had a few years left before she joined her father. Galande would keep ruling after her passing; and then the throne would be given to whoever Galande nominated next - Kraksang laws state that leaders cannot accept another mate if their current partner dies, so he could never have any offspring to hand it down to. This meant Galande would have to rule for years completely alone; something Alpkraka knew would break him, so she promised him it wouldn't happen. Eventually, Alpkraka held that promise - for the first time, one of the eggs was making sounds from within! Galande was exceedingly happy at his, as well as Alpkraka, as the two had been longing for a whelpling for years. The Kraksang too were joyful; Alpkraka was kind and strong, and Galande's arrogance had changed into a fierce honour, so the clan knew that their offspring would be just as kind, brave, and powerful. When the egg finally hatched, however, all previous thoughts of kindness immediately dissipated; for the Fae that crawled out of the egg did not share the same symbolic dark scales as his parents or clanmates - he was pure white. Immediately the clan began to throw shame and insults at the whelpling, and words of pity towards Alpkraka and Galande. The young Fae was given the name Vardelos by the clan (another Kraksang tradition is that the clan names offspring of the leaders), which meant 'useless', and ridiculed for his albinism. No crows cawed that evening, leading the clan to further believe that the pale Fae was a burden and an ill omen to their clan. Galande and Alpkraka did not recieve the same mockery, however - only pity and comfort. While it was hard not to resent the little Fae for being so staggeringly different, Galande still felt a connection to him and pitied the innocent soul for all the aggravated words being spat at him. Alpkraka, now being barely strong enough to even move, confined herself to the thicket where she and Galande lived and rarely emerged. She always seemed to be weeping; feeling as though she had failed herself, Galande, and the whole clan. From that point onwards, the two became incredibly distant. |

THE END OF IT ALL Alpkraka's life came to an end soon after the hatching of Vardelos. In a speculation that the young Fae's horrific appearance was the ultimate cause of his mother's death, seeing as though the guilt and heartbreak was what caused her downfall, even Galande couldn't help but feel a flicker of resentment towards him. Vandelos still lived with the Kraksang, with his father, but all inheritance to the clan itself was taken away. As he'd been outcasted almost immediately, the leadership would now be passed on to whoever Galande chose, as laws stated. Little did the Banescale know, he'd never get the chance to choose the new leader. Alpkraka was Galande's anchor; the reason why his attitude changed so drastically, and why he changed for the better. Without her, the Banescale's underlying arrogance came creeping back, until he too began to shun his son with the rest of the clan. He refused to accept that Vardelos was even his own offspring eventually, thinking he and Alpkraka were too pure to produce such a blot to the clan, and saw him as a curse. Vardelos only had his father left; seeing as everyone else hated him for reasons he didn't understand even when he was older. He grew up seeing a different side to the Kraksang; was their worshipping of the corvids honourable, or was it just a reason to bully and shun whoever didn't fit their standards? After losing his only tie to his reluctant clan, the Fae saw no reason in keeping quiet anymore. Being mocked for his whole life had resulted in a very cold, mad and bitter soul; and losing Galande, the only dragon he'd ever called a friend, was all that it took for him to snap completely. He took on the new name of Grymhet, and under the cover of darkness, began swiftly ending each and every one of the Kraksang. Galande was the last to be slaughtered; Grymhet gave him an opportunity to explain himself, asking why he'd let his own son be taunted and ridiculed by his clan. For every scar he'd been given by his clanmates, he mirrored it on Galande with his daggers, until the Banescale couldn't hold against the Fae any longer; for the first time in his life he'd been defeated - by none other than his own outcasted son. He lay on the floor of his throne room, staring at the seat that Alpkraka once sat on, wondering if she'd have treated her son any differently. Finally, he looked back at Grymhet, wishing he'd never turned his back on the Fae, wondering if this still would have happened if he'd been shown a fraction of care, before closing his eyes forever. |
