"Why do you make me hide away at night?" The face of a young gaoler peered up at his caretaker, deep purple eyes swimming with emotion. To him, the night was nothing but a comfort - the speckling of stars overhead a reminder that though day would come again, the time had come for the loud, bright world to settle down. The perfect time to wander the beach accompanied by nothing but the rush of waves and his own thoughts. Instead, he was forced to hide inside, the outside world obscured by light reflecting on stained glass. "Sensible wyrmlings, my dear boy, hide away to stay safe. Great and terrible things hide in the dark of night, and we dragons are beacons for all to see. Targets." The imperial's gaze was stern, bright yellow eyes glowing softly and casting a faint shine on his golden spectacles. It had been years since he found the natural-born near the moonportal, a tight bundle of golden fur curled to hide his face from the midday sun. Though his every instinct insisted he may be a trap, or a spy from the other side of the portal, he hadn't the heart to abandon him. Perhaps his luminous coat was proof the Lightweaver too accepted him. "Our Mother's beacon shines eternally over the land, but it cannot penetrate every shadow. We are extensions of Her light; seeing all, but seen by all. Our greatest strength is our greatest weakness; in darkness we cannot hide." "But I can! I don't glow like you and I can see perfectly by only the light of the radiant eye. The day is so bright and loud that I can't see anything at all!" Emboldened by his own words, Erebos stood tall before his caretaker, reaching her vast shoulder. "To me the light is blinding." Forehead creased with lines of worry, Hibiscus leaned forward and pulled his young companion into a hug, wrapping him with both wings and arms. "I just want you to be safe, my love. Nothing scares me more than losing you." Erebos' defiant posture softened, then with a huff he relaxed into his guardian's arms. "I'll never leave you. Promise." In the warm darkness of the imperial's embrace, a single black tear burned away unseen. |
