Sea Spirit
One way the Fleetwing Canyon Clan flourishes with trade is through its thriving coastal port on the shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. While most cargo transports are made using airships, the bay still acts as a vital connection to the rest of Sornieth. This connection is somewhat odd and unique for such a clan, however; most dragons of the Wind Flight have a fear of water and aquatic travel. Most are far too skittish to brave the sea and let their precious goods be threatened by the possibility of bad weather and misfortune. The Fleetwing Clan’s sailors, however, have a guardian to protect them. Deidre is a spirit of wealth, luck, and protection. She is said to live outside the clan’s bay, deep within the ocean revines, keeping a watchful eye on the ships that pass above. She has a hatred for greed, thievery and selfishness; if she ever comes across pirates or greedy captains who abuse their crew, she brings them bad luck and stormy seas until the ships capsize, dumping their cargo into the abyss. Deidre will then raid them of their money and jewels and hide them in a hidden hoard somewhere, or will simply let the many currents carry the stolen goods back to their rightful owners, whether it be the one whom the money was stolen from, or those who need the money the most. In order to pacify and please this sea spirit, Fleetwing Clan members will make small offerings to the ocean before setting sail. It is customary to throw gold coins, silver dollars or precious jewels into the water for Deidre to collect or give to the poor. In return Deidre will give them safe passage across the seas to the travelers. Poor sailors need not fear, however, as the proper payment required for safe travels is relative to the wealth of the sailor; and if a rich sailor were to only offer up pocket change, Deidre would ensure that they suffer the consequences for their greed. Thanks to Deidre, the traders and merchants of the clan can send off their ships without fear of disaster, as long as they make sure to be generous with their wealth. |
