One of the Rest's semifrequent visitors. A smooth-talking Imperial who is more at home on the frontier than he is in town. Houston makes a living escorting caravans of livestock through the dangerous parts of the Shifting Expanse, where his skill with both bow and pistol comes in handy. Born on the border between the Scarred Wasteland and Dragonhome, Houston never felt connected to either Plague or Earth. The youngest of a large family, he was only spared a passing glance by his parents and siblings. He spent most of his childhood in the scrubby desert surrounding the little town he called home. The town eventually was abandoned, its residents gone to look for better fortunes elsewhere, and Houston went his own way. He tried working on a ship sailing the Sea of a Thousand Currents, but never could get his sea legs, and quit at the first opportunity. This opportunity was in Traveler's Rest, a town much too crowded and bustling for Houston's taste. Luckily, he didn't have to stay long before finding his next job. Escorting ground caravans paid well, and got him away from the clamor of the city. Houston's life has stayed much the same since. He spends weeks out in the desert, both with caravans and alone on the return journey to the Rest. When he gets back, he collects his pay and spends a few days resting, cleaning up, and drinking at the (other dive bar that's not the Spades) before heading out again. With the growing influence of the railroad, however, it's uncertain how much longer this routine will be stable. Houston may find himself moving on or settling down before long. |
