"The fires warm the coldest of hearts; No walls can hide their need for warmth from me."

When the wind howls outside, rattling windows and frosting glass, drakes often hide deep within their homes. Those who find comfort in solitude at the hearth often find themselves joined by a young girl, stained in soot and ash. Those who try to intrude on their conversation are compelled to walk into the storm for firewood, never to return. Those who speak with the girl never recall more than a memory of warmth.

This is the tale of the Barghest Hestia.

Not many make deals with Barghests, especially those left as wisps of dreams long lost to time. And yet, they can become such strange things when they accept such a bargain. A dreamwalker, cursed to wander the world in a daze, never truly awake nor asleep, but also never truly alone. The sight is rare, if not harmless for the most part. But stranger still are the pups that rise from their shared dream, wandering to explore the facets of the world they now share. Where they cannot walk, their pups can race, taking what little they can of the waking world to walk in their own dream, one they will always find shared with another...

The dreamer sat on the edge of the ruins of Arcadia, their eyes forever closed as they shivered. Since the last clutch, they'd often dreamt of other memories, trying to bring about something strong enough for their companion to connect with. The last two had been so very easy, with memories of the summer sun and flowers shifting in the wind bringing laughter to her eyes. However, his former delights hadn't brought about the same strength in his partner, just gentle smiles or soft sighs. So he took another approach.

He may be dreaming, but he could still feel. The snow had fallen for a long time, leaving the ground solid as ice beneath the drifts. The nights were long, cold and dark. Even the memories of summer sun couldn't stave off the fear the long nights brought, even when he had been small. He could tell his partner wasn't fond of the cold either, vaguely spotting a pale form in his dream puffing out against a cold she couldn't truly feel. Still the two waited, silent save for the crack of ice and the whistle of the wind.

Then he brought it forth. It may not have been there in the waking world, but in his dream he saw it clear as day. A fire, crackling on the dried logs of a tree that'd fallen to the harsh weather some time ago. He stretched a wing over the dream fire, how warm and inviting it truly felt as he swore it began to melt away the layers of frost on his form. Vaguely he imagined the forms of other drakes laughing by the fire, warming themselves and telling stories. He hoped the memory would be enough to give his partner strength, that feeling the biting cold would make it stronger.

He didn't expect two of the shadowy forms to spring to life like embers from the flame.

The first was scruffy, his fur a tangled mess. He dipped and rolled about in the soot and ash, his tail catching alight as he moved about. He didn't even seem to notice as Ayumu rushed to stamp the fire out, saving the pup. He could see his wisp-like companion jump back as the firstborn rolled about, then started racing around the fire. It seemed the flames didn't bother him at all as he finally settled away from them all, watching with wide eyes.

The second was calmer than her brother, her own fur silky and smooth. She never drew too close to the flame, instead smiling and chattering at the other shadows beside her as if they were alive as well. She almost looked offended when her brother raced by her, leaving traces of soot on her coat. Even her parents weren't spared from her ire when they tried to intercede in her conversation, hoping to gently pull her away from the flame.

Eventually, the fire began to die down. The dreamer turned to his partner as Ophelia drew herself up, ready to guide the pups away to a new home. They were both stubborn, refusing to leave the fire as she chided them gently. All seemed to be going well enough. Then the firstborn leapt forward, grabbing a stick from the fire before racing off into the woods, leaving snow kicked up in his wake. The dreamer readied himself to chase the pup, but the wisp hound gently stopped him. The pup could forge his own destiny. He did not need their guidance.

The second waited until the fire died fully before stepping into the embers, coating her paws in ash as she picked up a charred branch left behind. With the elegance of a show dog, despite her now sooty coat, she walked up to her mother and waited. The pair soon walked away, Ophelia in the lead as she guided her daughter to a new hearth.

Ayumu was found when the storm finally abated, seemingly frozen in place. Unlike most encounters with the sleepwalker, the drakes in the search party were stunned to find a pair of blind eyes staring ahead, as if they were watching something. While a set of prints led off to one of the many roads travelers took to leave Arcadia, another led off into the wilderness, to a place in the distance only those blind eyes seemed to see. All they ever got in reply to their queries was the same, somewhat worried statement.

"My son couldn't leave the fire behind. He couldn't leave it..."
